I have been a regular at Devon Barbers right from the time Jimmy owned the place. Caroline, the new owner, is without doubt a very good and skilled barber. I went to her and Ivan for almost a year after Jimmy left. However, I found myself waiting for an unreasonable amount of time every time I went for a haircut. Reason being that Caroline chats incessantly with selected customers with no regard whatsoever for those waiting. When it eventually was my turn, I was almost always done in less than 10 minutes, which is actually all the time anyone should need to have a decent haircut. My point is- appreciate the fact that your customer is king and that your business establishment is not a social hub for your personal chat and catch up sessions at the expense of the others who are very likely the ones paying the overheads. With a heavy heart and an even heavier head- I have thrown the towel in. Being a creature of habit and a loyalist of sorts; I made this decision with regret. However with delight I discovered a great and very professional barber in the vicinity who is efficient, considerate and equally, if not more skilled.

Caroline is the best barber I’ve been to, hands down. She always shows care and pays great attention to the finer details (something I’ve had to pull other barbers up on in the past). From the first time I went there, she nailed my “not-so-regular” mini mohawk with a fade. The shop is always bright and friendly, full of good chats and great music, with many a laugh to be had. If only I lived closer, she’d be my regular barber - no question.

My partner was getting great haircuts here until today. The barber started off quite rudely by not wanting to see the photo my partner had (first just wouldn't look and then only glanced) and then by saying "I've been doing this for 30 years. That's nothing new. I had that haircut like 5 years ago". Rude. He didn't talk to my partner for the entire haircut, he talked to his coworkers. He didn't even ask any questions like "do you want it shorter?". If he had asked that, he might have known that my partner didn't want it shorter. He left with the a short fringe, clipped sides that aren't blended into the top of his head very well and the hair on the very top is longer than anywhere else by almost an inch. Not a great look. The barber who cut his hair rook half the amount of time as the other hairdressers did to cut their clients hair and yet the haircuts were all very similar. Before I'd got to have a proper look at my partners hair, I asked for my turn and was told no because I'm female. I was confused as I've been to plenty of unisex barbers before, there were no signs, the staff are male and female and I only have an inch of hair on my head (I just wanted it trimmed too). When I queried them, I got told "if you do one, you gotta do 'em all". After properly scoping out my partners haircut, I was relieved that they blatantly discriminated against me and that I didn't get an uneven haircut. By the way, if a hairdressers salon did that to a male, they'd be sued for discrimination and be made into a news story. We won't be returning after this and my partner is now waiting for his hair to grow out so that he can get it cut properly at a different barbers. Total waste of time and money too.
