We visited on a Wednesday, and was definitely worth the visit. There is no admission fee - but I’d suggest you volunteer a few dollars for the upkeep. Paul showed us around, and he is a wealth of knowledge about everything Derwent Valley Railway! For a railway buff like me, it’s great to see up close and personal the display of locos and rolling stock and some of their history. It’s a real shame that the Tasmanian government of any persuasion don’t support this venture, being anti-rail. If up and running it could pump millions of tourist dollars into the local communities along the line. It’s a must see - the volunteers are friendly and up for a chat. I’d thoroughly recommend you to visit the DVR!
Very impressive, really happy we stopped by. The lovely lady escorted us through with so much information about what was and the dream of what will be. The volunteer workers seem to be ex rail employees and rail buffs that really are passionate and knowledgeable about their railway. Will go back definitely. Thankyou
Great tour of the railway! Sorry it isn’t up and running though and it’s too costly for it to start up! Real shame as there is such potential for this to be operative! Love those old trains!!!
A very worthwhile experience for rail enthusiasts and tourists. A significant collection of Tasmanian railway locomotives, passenger coaches and freight rolling stock plus track maintenance vehicles. The knowledge, experience and enthusiasm of the DVR people we met was impressive, with their commitment to preparing to run an operational railway when they have track access again in the future.
Best afternoon in a long time. Staff are so helpful with a guided tour.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Really interesting rail line. So close to the road and the river.
A must for rail and train fans while visiting Hobart and surrounds. I love the work these volunteers are doing not just supporting rail heritage but for the wider community and tourism.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
While they are trying to get back on the mainline they conducted me on a personal tour of the workshops. Had a great time, lots to see. Hope to see you at National Park station in the not too distant future. Thanks Owen.
Great knowledge, took us through carriages and into a loco. Great experience.Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 min
