If you dont know by now the main reason many go to derrimut is the price. Because the facilities at each one ive been to including norwood are filthy, they wait until cable attachments are hanging by a single thread before replacing them, and squeaky attachments don't ever seem to be maintained. You can virtually feel the build up of skin cells and sweat when you touch this stuff. Equipment doesn't seem to ever get wiped down thoroughly from dust and grime. Though, the bathrooms are somewhat looked after and at least the staff are friendly. The gym is large with a lot to work with yet gets really busy. Norwood seem to also fix broken machines etc more promptly than when Melrose park was open which was even worse. This gym has a women's section that is small and less overwhelming which I appreciate- here it's also more likely people will actually wipe the bench after using it

Great wee gym. I mainly train very early mornings and the wee staff member on night duty is always friendly and helpful. Like any gym, you’ll occasionally see equipment used the wrong way which can cause wear, but the team does their best to keep things maintained.nThe environment at quieter hours like 2am is especially good.nUnfortunately I won’t be renewing due to personal circumstances, which is a shame because I’ve enjoyed training here.
Left my old gym because of cleanliness issues but nothing could have prepared me for Derrimuts. Cleaning the running machines which are old tech is clearly optional, a couple of which still don’t work properly. Toilets are ritually a mess. Have been away intestate for a while and took a membership which is not dissimilar in price to this one but every machine was brand new. Will be cancelling.
I’ve been a member here for over five years, although I haven’t attended for the past 2–3 months. I’ll be starting again shortly, and I genuinely hope a few things have improved in that time.nnMy biggest ongoing concern has been cleanliness. During some of my previous visits, particularly around the cardio/CrossFit-style equipment, the standard really wasn’t acceptable. I’ve seen members place large amounts of paper towel around machines and on the floor because they know they’re going to sweat heavily, only for the area to end up with sweat visibly pooling around the equipment. At that point it stops being a minor etiquette issue and becomes something staff should actively supervise and address. It can make other members reluctant to use the equipment at all.nnThe men’s change rooms and toilets have also been particularly unpleasant at times. I normally avoid using them altogether, but occasionally need to go in simply to wash my hands before leaving. On some visits, even approaching the change-room area because of the smell has been a genuine challenge. I’m hoping the cooler weather and, ideally, improved cleaning and supervision have made a noticeable difference.nnI also remain very disappointed with the way the annual membership pricing was presented previously. I paid roughly $670–$700 during what was promoted to me as an exceptionally low sale price, with the strong impression that pricing would be increasing rather than becoming cheaper. Seeing substantially lower prices offered afterwards understandably left a very poor impression. I accept that I made the decision to purchase at the time and could have been more patient, but long-term members should be able to have reasonable confidence in the way major “sale” pricing is communicated.nnI do have photographic evidence of some of the cleanliness issues I encountered, including the condition around equipment, but I don’t think it would be appropriate to post photographs that clearly identify individual members. My concern is with the standard being allowed to continue, not with publicly singling somebody out.nnI’m writing this because I’ve been coming here for years and would genuinely like to see the gym improve. The facility has plenty going for it, but cleanliness, member hygiene standards, staff supervision and transparent membership pricing are basic things that should be handled consistently.nnHopefully when I return, I’ll be pleasantly surprised. Fingers crossed.
