BEWARE! This company is the epitome of Shonky! Walking into the premise alone should be cause to turn around (believe me I thought about it, other than feeling ablidge because I had phoned up prior to reserve said machine). The premises is cluttered with relics of equipment the first white fellas would have first used when captain cook first colonised Australia, through this junk yard you are lead whilst a scarcely clothed lad is welding a lawn mower bed for its dozenth time. No regard for health and safety or hygiene is taken as you clamber over the varying degree of junk yard scrap for hire. Finally you reach the office, where you can't be afforded the luxury of a seat whilst they copy your license details into what must be a windows 95 or 98 computer. The office is a plume of dirt and dusk, the carpet hasn't seen a vacuum since it was laid in 1980. Out of the window I caught a heavy goods truck, a serious bit of weight, I'd hazard a guess it would have a gvm of between 16-32tonne. It is clad with bald tyres all round, carrying a large excovator and is being driven on a trade plate. Upon enquiry to the member of staff, the balding gent smiles, offering story's and recounts of trips they have travelled to deliver machinery to jobs sites whilst under load on a Queensland dealer plate. "Even as far as jimboomba I've been" he boasted, his smile as seedy as the place in which he works. "If we get stopped by the police, we just tell 'em it's for testing purposes"... "even got a fine for unregistered driving last week, just sent a letter back saying the trade plate was on the back" This highly illegal and dangerous practise naturally carries through to the rest of the company's practices. I had the displeasure of hiring a stump grinder for $176, wish I'd have paid the $218 at kennards now!! The machine was well worked, something you'd want to pay a couple hundred bucks for at manheim trucks and machinery auction. Really only ever destined now at this point in its life to be an odd-jobber for a handy man around the house. The staff member was quick to point out how they'd had the back yard enginuity to retro fit a cheap Chinese replacement engine after the original quality blew up, a "Chonda" he called it. No rental contract was signed, no safety demo or manual was provided. Neither was a damage report or report of the equipments current condition. The staff member did check it ran, which is where the poorly serviced relic had its first issue. A broken kill switch wire meant he couldn't turn the machine off after he has done a test start, highly dangerous when even apply choke wouldn't kill the little 'Chonda'. Stump end spinning he reached around to find several broken wires, eventually earthing one of the splits together he killed the engine and bodged them back together. I was given a folded up receipt and sent on my way after the staff member forked it onto my truck. Upon using the equipment for the first time, I could tell it was really showing it's age. The retrofitted Chonda didn't really have the umph to get the job done. The drive belts would slip and smoke up, even when the grinding end was freely spinning. And my god did the little Chonda take some starting. I've had kick back on 70's Triumph motor bikes in the past, but this thing near ripped your hand off everything you needed to start it. (Which was fairly frequently considering the Chonda liked a good rest between palm tree stumps). I though to myself, you know what, I've only Got an hour left with the machine, I'll limp it through and next time I'll use kennards. But then the enevitable happened. With one hour until she was due back at the scrap yard, the pull cable broke. On my last big stump too. Not to worry I thought, I'm only down the road, I'm sure the lads won't be two busy welding broken lawn mower beds to pop out and fix the old Chonda. Oh how I was wrong. Due to character limit; I have to cut this short. Until threatened with credit card company involvement. They left me high and dry. Eventually sending someone to fix.
