Clonard College

Story

Clonard College is a girls' secondary school located in Herne Hill, Victoria, Australia.Founded and owned by the Brigidine Sisters in 1956, Clonard College draws its rich heritage from the traditions of Brigidine order. In 2010, Damian McKew was appointed Principal after spending four and a half years as Principal of Trinity College Colac.Clonard - as a school - came into existence (officially) in 1956. At the invitation of Father John Tresidder (Manifold Parish Priest), the Brigidine Sisters acquired the Clonard property and retained the name "Clonard" because of the association between Saint Brigid and Saint Finnian of Clonard in fifth century Ireland. There was a crisis in Catholic education at the time as Sacred Heart, Geelong's only Catholic college, was severely overcrowded.Early in 1956, a group of founder sisters, including the much lauded Sister Lelia Grant, began taking classes at Clonard. In its initial year, Clonard College boasted 40 students.Clonard College was officially opened on February 9, 1958.Key moments in the College's development included the simultaneous construction of an assembly hall and library, in 1977, partly funded by the first Federal grant. In 1983, Mr John Shannon became the first full-time lay Principal. In the late 1990s Clonard's leadership followed the example of some other Brigidine schools in adopting Co Principalship model when Mrs Vicki Myers (a former Clonard student) joined Mr Michael Doyle in the Co Principal positions. The late 1990s and early part of the 21st century saw revitalised enrolment growth, accommodated by expansive building programs, delivering a theatre, design education centre, materials technology room, expanded office space, refurbished science facilities, a gymnasium and multi purpose court within the school grounds.

Under the previous leadership of Mr McKew, this school had a positive and inclusive culture, encouraged student voice/opinions, and was progressive enough to incorporate today's societal values. The school has declined considerably under the leadership of Ms Quinn. Many of the wonderful and dedicated teachers, who supported and motivated students to achieve their goals have left. The school is now ultra conservative and at the whim of decisions Ms Quinn bases on her on own opinions. Students are unable to show any individuality and are expected to conform to old fashioned values and morals.
The uniform is outrageous. The principal, Mrs. Luci Quinn, has destroyed the uniform and the school rules. None of the teachers think about our mental state and they WILL NOT let us go to the bathroom when necessary, ridiculous for a only girls school, since girls may need to go to the bathroom for personal reasons. Mrs. Luci Quinn keeps the assemblies going for hours on end. It is very hard to focus in school as the uniform is quite uncomfortable, all the useless changes to the uniform have made it way too expensive and uncomfortable for students. The uniform looks a little messy. The NEW UNIFORM however is absolutely horrendous and does not work with anyone. There was no need to update the uniform at all. Onto the education stage of my rant, Please note, I am being honest. the school does not offer enough study options and time to complete work in. The new Wellbeing structure is useless and does suit students and they don't complete work in these classes. Some teachers need better communication skills and to understand that some students can't complete work on time when needed. Now we talk about the canteen; BRING BACK THE LIFE SAVERS. Thank you, and goodbye, I have more to say, but I will hold back. This wellbeing period that i'm currently in..... is awful. <3
Being a student at Clonard collage, the uniform rules have gone to an extreme level. Luci quin has changed the uniform expectations dramatically and from the impression I have seen of this school, they don't care about you academically nor mentally, etc.. They seem to mainly worry about is how we look. They criticize what we wear and how we look. Luci Quin has forced staff to walk all around Minerva and any bus stop just to nag at students to put their hair up and blazer on. Its ridiculous.
Clonard has declined to a point of no return, once an inclusive and modern school has quickly diminished making me question the school's morals towards their students. If I had of known that this school would change so vastly under the new leadership I definitely would have reconsidered and chosen another catholic school that allows students to have their own identity.
A wonderful school. My daughter loved it and I would recommend it to anyone. Family orientated and Staff are approachable and go out of their way to assist, not only your daughter, but the whole family. Great memories of this school :
