Clairvaux MacKillop College

Story

Clairvaux MacKillop College is a co-educational, secondary catholic school located in Upper Mount Gravatt, a suburb in the south side of Brisbane, Australia. With a student body of over 1100, the school was founded in 1986 by the amalgamation of Clairvaux College and the MacKillop Catholic College. It houses the Edmund Rice Centre, which is used for the education of learning impaired students.HistoryClairvaux College was founded by the Christian Brothers in 1966 as a Catholic all-boys secondary school with Brother Surawski as principal. In 1971 it was decided that the all-girls Catholic secondary school St Joseph's College be moved from its current location in Holland Park to the site adjoining Clairvaux College and be renamed Mackillop College. Sister Margaret Mary Campbell was the first principal. Both schools operated as separate colleges until 1984, with some sharing of classes, teaching staff, and sports facilities. A decision was made to amalgamate the two colleges and full integration occurred in 1988 with the co-educational school renamed to Clairvaux MacKillop College.House systemThe students are divided into the following 6 houses: Aspinall : Named after Father Kevin Aspinall, PP.Campbell : Named after Sister Margaret Mary Campbell, first principal of Mackillop. Chisholm : Named after Caroline Chisholm. MacKillop : Named after Mary MacKillop. Rice : Named after Edmund Rice.Surawski : Named after Brother Surawski, the first principal of Clairvaux College. The house system was expanded in 1995 and the six houses participate in fund raising for selected charities, vie in three inter-house sporting events annually and come together as a united college for inter-school sport events.

Friendly staff, approachable school principal, students seems very well behaved and good and clean school grounds.
The Science Department is great! Teachers work hard to offer extracurricular opportunities to students. Clairvaux students are involved in the STEM Program about Space Exploration SPASE, the Opti-minds Creativity Challenge, the Lord Mayor's Young Environmental Leadership Network, and Griffith University's STEM Ambassador Program. The college also facilitates opportunities for students to participate in competitions such as the Science and Engineering competition, and the Chemistry Titration competition. Science week activities are organised and run by enthusiastic students, who are committed to playing a leadership role in promoting awareness of all things STEM. STEM is actually available as an elective subject so that students can learn how to; use Industry Standard design programs such as Fusion 360, print their own inventions using 3D printers. Drones technology is also studied. This includes the components that make up a drone, how they fly, and how to automate their flying through coding. The role of math in determining drone flight paths also becomes clear as students extend their knowledge of maths beyond their grade level. If you want to provide students with 21st century skills, this is a great school to be at.
Moving away from this school was the best decision I ever made for my sons future.nNo nurturing of students potential, so many problems embedded in this school. Obviously poor leadership!nWithin 1 term of switching schools my son went from disengaged & failing school & a terrible self esteem to a total 100% flip.nThis school is ruining futures of bright kids!nIn 4 years met only a handful of capable staff that actually put the children first - though mostly they were the office staff & the uniform shop lady!nIf I could give less than 1 star I would!
School has improved over the last few years and is doing better under the management of Mr Wayne Chapman. The school is very competitive internally. Some classrooms contain mould generally caused by leaking air conditioning. Many have criticised the school’s controversial solution to vaping in the bathrooms by removing a large segment of wall of both the year junior girls and boys bathroom ground floor of M-block. Students continue to vape and have begun using the toilets near gym below K-block music rooms or the senior toilets to continue vaping. S-block Sciences building equipment Multimeters, analog voltmeters and ammeters, gauze mats are aged and S5 frequently smells like sulphur. D-block drama rooms smell like mould, and S-block and W-block woodwork rooms frequently have glasses taken by students.
Really lovely students. Vibrant, warm community :
