I went into CD Gallery to view a work by Ken Johnson. Christopher Day extolled the virtues of the mid career artist and it was indeed an appealing piece. The work was priced at $35,000. As we sat at a desk in the middle of the gallery, Day talked provenance and how it was an important example and therefore a work with a solid investment profile.  The trouble for the hapless Mr. Day was that I had done my homework. “What in your experience is the risk associated with a piece like this when assessing investment potential and downsides?” I ask. He assures me that there’s always risk but over time there was “great value” with a work of this type. I slid a single page across the table - auction results from around 90 days earlier showing that Day had acquired the piece at auction for just under $4000. Day began to scratch at his chin furiously until he bled. I asked about the enormous loss taken by the sellers and while dabbing a Kleenex to stem his chin bleeding, he stood and hastily fled to the back room without further comment and never came back. His assistant stood mute. I think they call that an “own goal”.  Mr Day, when asked for advice in your professed area of expertise, I think that on that day, you were the poster boy for Caveat Emptor. A 900% markup
