Literally run by a husband and wife team only, Champagne Charlize is a local gem in East Bentleigh and watching him greet his regular clients shows. You can see there were many people at the restaurant that he seemed to know personally, and that's something you don't see often these days. When you walk in, it smells like home cooking and gets you salivating before you've even sat down. The menu is on an easel and he brings it around to each table and puts it back between orders. For one cook and one wait staff, the time between placing your order and receiving your food is reasonable. I must say, it's probably due to this that they cut a few corners, and some things were definitely microwaved, but for the most part, things tasted good, except for the few things that tasted like they'd been in the freezer a long while. There were some things that had an element of not being so fresh, which was a bit disappointing. There were also quite a few items off the menu last night, due to the fact they're closing in a few weeks, and apparently the new owner didn't want stock left which DEFINITELY makes me think some foods aren't fresh. That part was very disappointing. He'd go and cross things off the menu throughout the night as people ordered the last of it. With that said ... if you get a chance before they close soon to eat here, there's a nice selection of European style food that most of us really enjoyed. The service was friendly and prices reasonable and the decor homely and comforting. They do a great job for only two people. I hope they enjoy retirement when the time comes.
This may not set the active wearers alight with a menu full of quinoa and avocado. However, the food is very tasty, owners friendly and overall excellent value. The Transylvanian layered beef cabbage was great, would have again.
We have been going to this beautiful restaurant for a few years and l have to say that Alex and Eve make us feel so welcome and special. It’s as if we have walked into their dining room in their home for a beautiful delicious home-cooked meal. The dishes are different, hearty, beautifully presented and generous in terms of portions, not to mention very reasonably priced. We love how they treat every customer and the love and care that goes into every dish. It’s a fairly quiet and cosy restaurant which is so refreshing - you can actually hear yourself talk! They are so proud of their food and it’s no wonder why. I highly recommend you try this place for a different/special experience - it’s a little gem that shines ever so brightly in beautiful Bentleigh.
This small little restaurant is well worth a visit, but I would suggest to book as there is very limited space. Alex will greet you and almost straight away you will feel like you have space shifted into a Baltic village. Alex may be showing a few years, but rushes around the restaurant better than someone half his age. the experience he brings makes sure things are just right. Between us we had the lamb shank, traditional goulash & mussels, and all came with very generous size portions. Taste wise all of the three mains ticked the boxes and tickled the taste buds. The lamb shank holding on to the bone just long enough to dig the fork in and the mussels were particularly tender. Desert menu gave you ample choices and well proportioned after the large mains. Thumbs up for the sticky date pudding.
We were lucky enough to visit before the old owners retired on 30th June 22. The food and service was devine. A real gem in Bentleigh that I hope continues its quality of food and service with the new owners.
My wife and I ate at Champagne Charlize on Friday, 9 July 2021. The restaurant was busy when we arrived at 7 pm. We were greeted by a polite old gentleman, who appeared to be the only person working in the front of house. We ordered the Garlic bread for 2 for $6.90 and the Seafood Chowder $15.70, which we wanted to share as a starter. The chowder was fine. It had a good selection of seafood. The Garlic bread had the appearance and texture of cheap commercial white bread, which is disappointing given the fantastic bakers literally next door to the restaurant. How hard is it to produce appetising garlic bread? Not a good omen. Speaking of which, one end of a piece of the garlic bread was burnt, which I cut off and left on the plate. For the main, we ordered the Double-roasted, Orange-glazed Duck & Red Cabbage $28.50 and the Ossobuco Lombard cuisine $26.40. The duck was dry. The accompanying vegetables were cold or lukewarm. The vegetables must have been cooked sometime before and had not been reheated even to give the impression that they were freshly cooked. The corn had that shrivelled appearance from being allowed to become cold after being cooked. My wife picked a single long hair from her plate, which we assumed belonged to the cook. My wife did not want to complain about any of this. My dish the Ossobuco must have been reheated in the microwave seconds before being served. The mashed potatoes were too hot to eat and the Ossobuco was stone cold. I discreetly complained. The owner took the dish away, put it back in the microwave, blasted it for another minute before returning it to me. The second blasting in the microwave did nothing to improve the flavour of the dish. The owner did apologise and offered a complimentary drink. We accepted his suggestion of a lemon and lime squash. It proved to be undrinkable, as it was a sugary concoction heavily laced with Angostura bitters. The owner did not enquire why we had not drunk his complimentary drink We did not stay for dessert. Not wanting to cause a scene, I did not complain about this disappointing experience but paid the bill $77.50 and left. The next day, I went back to speak to the owner to explain that I was very disappointed. He apologised and said that it was only himself and his wife working last night and all the bookings had turned up simultaneously. He said that he gets very few complaints and that we ate the food. I can only assume that the owner is past the stage of being receptive to complaints or caring about whether his customers enjoy the experience of visiting his restaurant.
Very last minute booking. Info via Southern FM 88.3. First time there. VERY glad we made the decision to go. Fully booked and not noisy. Traditional Christmas Lunch. Choice of 3 mains with ALL the trimmings. A nice touch was that Eve chef visited all tables to have a chat. Alex took the time also to visit all tables. We where made to feel part of his family. Almost forgot, the food was excellent 12/10. PLEASE keep up the excellent work. Definitely be back in the New Year.
Great food, the lamb shank was so tender and fell off the bone, delicious! The American BBQ ribs were just as good. Their Strawberry Crepe’s are a winner! Excellent service and well priced. Thanks Champagne Charlize we can’t wait to return.
Great service! You need to try the Goulash.. absolutely delicious. Good menu options and wine list. We went on a Wednesday midday and it was soon packed.
Ordered takeaway for dinner and was not disappointed! Great service, great food and very generous portions! Definitely would recommend and will be back soon!
