Renee was extremely helpful this morning. I hadn’t stepped foot in a Centrelink for over 20 years and she showed me the way of Family Tax benefits. I’m very pleased with the outcome. Centrelink staff often get a bad rap but the service was excellent and they were having computer problems but handled disgruntled customers well.

Yes, it does involve a rather protracted period of time spent waiting to see someone. Idem on the phone, with no guarantee that your issue will be resolved, or that your call won’t be automatically disconnected. Yes, the computer system is ever so slightly idiosyncratic. However, when I went in today, the young woman who initially deals with your request was brilliant which is why I am giving her 5 stars. She remembered me from yesterday (when I couldn’t be helped because their system wasn’t working), remembered what I was in for, and was apologetic that there was long wait. I watched her deal with other people before and after me and she showed courtesy, humour and above all empathy. Well done her in a difficult job dealing with peoples difficulties which cause them stress and make them impatient, and probably uncharacteristically rude. Just remember, don’t blame the employee, blame the society we have created in which such unwieldy bureaucracy exists.

Overall Centrelink is dreadful to deal with. The government has cut costs and staff to the bare minimum and dealing with them is a massive pain in the rear end. The staff were really great but they're overworked and if you must visit, a little politeness and consideration goes a long way. The fastest way to get things done is use their website or ring them at 8.00am.

Walked into Centerlink Geelong and never have I ever received such poor customer service. I walked up to the lady who was taking enquires and I was polite and waiting my turn in line. Once she said 'next please' i walked up, introduced myself and explained my issue. She didn't allow me to finish what I wanted to say and assumed everything else. I felt so disrespected and didn't ask everything I wanted to. She was fidgeting and walked away once without excusing herself. I'd rather sit on hold for 2 hours instead of putting up this. Not impressed at all.
