Cataract Gorge Reserve

Story

The Cataract Gorge is a river gorge in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia, approximately 1.5 km from the city centre. It is one of the region's premier tourist attractions. It is found at the lower section of the South Esk River.HistoryThe earliest known European visitor to the site was William Collins, who discovered its entrance in 1804.A pathway, known as the King’s Bridge-Cataract Walk, and originally built by volunteers in the 1890s, runs along the north bank of the Cataract Gorge, and is a popular tourist destination. The original toll house at which pedestrians had to pay to enter the walk can still be seen near King's Bridge on the northern edge of the gorge.A chairlift is the longest single-span chairlift in the world, with the longest span being 308m. The chairlift, built in 1972, has a total span of 457m.Before the Trevallyn Dam was built upstream in the 1950s, flood waters could rise up as high as 12 metres. In the past, there was a power station at Duck Reach, about 2.5km from a suspension bridge which was built in 1940. It was washed away in the floods of 1929, rebuilt and then decommissioned when the Trevallyn Dam was finished in 1955. The building is now an interpretive museum.

Fantastic place! Guides weren’t full of knowledge, but they were helpful! First basin loop was a great entry level walk for little kids, included going over the bridge, but only too 30 mins tops. Finished off with a swim in the pristine pool which was perfect for the kids with a toddler shallow side and a deep proper swim side. Parents had a go on the chairlift which they enjoyed. Well done for having such a brilliant resource!

So not what I expected but a beautiful way to spend the day. There is a pool at the edge of the gorge where you can swim or you can swim in the gorge. Chairlift that is reasonably priced to get from one side to the other and the meal we had at the cafe was delicious. All in all it was good food, beautiful weather and scenery to enjoy right in the heart of Launceston. A MUST visit!!

A real gem near Launceston. We did several walks here, took the seat lift and enjoyed the scenery. There is a beautiful park with a public BBQ, swimming pool, and a cafe/restaurant. You can see many beautiful peacocks through the entire place. We enjoyed the day to the fullest here!

Beautiful place for walks and commune with nature. Lots of tame peacocks near the Cafe rotunda area. The make peacocks put on a very good show for the girls walking about with their baby chicks. Saw a wild echidna that was obviously used to people gawking at and taking photos of it up close. Cafe has the best ever chunky pies! Good views from all the lookouts. Give yourself lots of time to enjoy the walks and scenery.

Wow. Incredible! We were not expecting it to be this amazing. We paid for a round trip chair lift when we should have just paid for one way. The trails, wallabies, peacocks and playground were a hit for our kids. Really really loved it.
