Nice garden. Great for picnic or just for a walk or being chill. Having free car park in the front and along the side of the garden. Having a lake, small playground and benches. Can visit the Mill Castlemaine also - just opposite across the road. If you are in the area and have some time to spare, can come and chill around!
With the reduction in size from original - it looks more like a park than Botanical Gardens. The elms & oaks are impressive as you walk clockwise but the Shire should pump more into maintenance. Lake Johanna who is she? is mottled with green algae & on the other side - some of Oaks are showing signs of stress. Weedy tufts of dry grass everywhere. Nevertheless - couple of garden beds are fringed with parsley & add a nice floral touch as does the wisteria covered arbour. Playground will keep kids happy & the duckies are a delight to watch.
Awesome and quiet place. Good for a morning walk and run. You would feel the energy and fresh air. Lot of ducks in the water. If you wish to enjoy nature, this is the place for you. Had a nice cold breeze morning walk. Parking is not a problem. Available from 3 sides of the garden. Finding the place on the maps can be tricky. The gps location is not correct on the map. Just google The Mill and its right opposite The Mill.
Beautiful time of the year to visit one of regional Victoria's oldest Botanical Gardens at circa 1860; roses in full bloom are stunning, green lush grasses and large variety of flora surrounding Lake Joanna and Augusta, great play ground and amenities- highly recommended
The Castlemaine Gardens were still beautiful today even though the official end of autumn is quickly approaching. I was most impressed at just how clean and well kept everything is , from the spotless toilets to the well maintained rotunda where we enjoyed a picnic lunch , to the neat newly planted garden beds ready for spring.
Nice roomy Gardens. European looking trees and natives. Not a lot of flowers or shrubs etc. Picnic benches, electric BBQ. More tables in shade next to kids playground.
Botanic garden close to the Mill, great for hanging out with friends, bbq or picnic.
Excellent gardens to walk around. Great playground for the kids, bbq area and the Mill across the road for food and a beer.
Decent place for picnic... nice play area for kids...
Well design garden to walk around and picnic. I went to first week of May. It was full of autumn beautiful color , people came to take photos as there are so many beautiful place to capture. Just short walk from the station. The mill factory in the opposite of garden is also must visit place. There are wine tasting, Vienna style coffee shop and vintage bazaar shop.
