Canterbury Primary School

Story

Canterbury Primary School provides a passionate learning community that inspires, challenges & supports all students to achieve their personal best and make a positive contribution to the world in which they live. The values (Respect, Responsibility, Integrity and Resilience) guide the decisions and behaviours of all members of the community. Student learning is personalised using flexible and dynamic student groupings to ensure all students are challenged at their point of learning need.

The school has approximately 600 students and employs approximately 60 staff. Built in 1908, the school is located in a heritage overlay area. The community appreciates and values the character and history of the school. We are very proud of the state of the art facility, opened in 2011, which incorporates a senior learning centre, music room, art room, internal senior toilets and gymnasium. The school is set in well maintained grounds with well-established trees providing a range of outdoor spaces for learning as well as passive and active play. This includes a synthetic turf oval and running track, two adventure playground areas and a range of quiet play outdoor areas. The school facilities are shared with the wider community.

The professional contribution made to the school and the wider community by the highly committed staff team is widely recognised. In order to continually improve student learning, staff pursue ongoing professional development linked into their performance and development plans.

The strong support and engagement of the school community and the high value it places upon learning contributes directly to students' achievement in learning and personal development. Parents are widely involved in the life of the school. Each year in May, the school's major fundraiser, the Canterbury Art Exhibition, draws the entire community together, showcasing works of contemporary art from artists across Australia.

I graduated from here 6 years ago. I only went here for one year but it genuinely blew my socks off.nnAlthough some of the teachers are mean for no reason you can tell that most of them genuinely want to be there.nnSo many activities to do like big projects each term, cooking, makerspace woodwork/textiles, school fete and Chinese cultural activities.nnThe only downside, which isn't even that big is the lack of a music program. Sure there are music classes but you mostly pay drums and use garage band. If your kid wants to play in a school band or learn an instrument in school, this isnt the place to be.nnOverall, I 100% reccomend this school.nMost of the students that go here end up doing super well in highschool :
I joined this school 2 yrs ago in yr 5 and it was scary but the teachers and students made me feel welcomed. Great facilities and teachers are dedicated to their jobs. Easy to make friends and there is little to no bullying that i have seen/ experienced. 100% dont regret coming to this school.
Graduated here a year ago! Best school! If any parents need a school for their kid, this is the way to go! nAlso shoutout to the teachers! Your guaranteed to get 100% on all tests. Only if you listen in class! SO KIDS PAY ATTENTION TO DO WHAT I DID!!!
This school receives the most government funding in the state, hence the exceptional facilities. There are many opportunities for students here, especially in the later years. Although the aesthetic of the school is great, there is a lot of corruption here. The principal is known for firing teachers for no reason, leaving students misguided and unable to keep up due to them not having an official teacher for some of the year. The school funds are often used for resources which the school does not need. The school board often decides to prioritise the “maker space” and “chicken shed” over the printing budget and maintenance of the school’s devices. Teachers in high positions also use their power to employ under qualified people in important positions, furthermore crippling the politics of this place. Overall the school provides young students with a decent education but many were left unprepared for high school due to the lack of homework. Besides this the place is okay
The school that I loved from the start. Nice staff and kind students. When I was there, we had 3 different principals in 7 years, all in which were nice. Canterbury Primary is amazing.
