Cactus Jack's

Story

Many years ago I had the opportunity to visit America and the border-towns of Texas and Mexico. I fell in love with both cultures and the vibrancy of the areas, and eating out was always a complete experience, filled with sights, sounds, smells and tastes that I’d never seen before.
It was the eighties and things were booming in the American economy. Rock ‘n’ roll was huge and everything was big and bright. Back home in Townsville, restaurants were dull, bland and boring. I had a vision to shake things up and bring some of the rich culture I’d experienced overseas to my hometown.
I wanted to create a place where as soon as you step in, you feel like you are transported to another world and where the daily pressures and stresses could be left outside the door for a while.
Inside, you became engulfed in the sights, sounds and smells of Cactus Jack’s. There is loud rock music from the 70’s through to today’s top hits. The smell of smoky grilled steaks sets your tastebuds to watering. The room is covered in vintage paraphernalia; nostalgic pieces from Aztec throw rugs, bow and arrows, Mexican sombreros and ponchos to posters of Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry and Western cowboy boots, hats and rifles and so much more that every time you come back you spot something you hadn’t noticed last time! Our ‘thing’ is not just Mexican, although many people say it is. We are Tex-Mex, from both sides of the border-towns of Mexico and Texas. We love whisky and tequila, steaks and nachos. We have our amigos and our “pardners” and all are welcome and considered family.
Cactus Jack’s has been in operation for 23 years. Our home is Townsville, North Queensland where our original restaurant on Palmer Street was opened with dust blowing past the door, homeless people across the street, but always a line-up of eaters and drinkers out the front. Our reputation grew from there as ‘the best darned value for money, eatin’ and drinkin’ in town!’
We now have restaurants from Brisbane to Cairns, and 24 years on are still keeping the locals happy with great value Tex-Mex. We hope you enjoy Cactus Jack’s too!

Came here on a friends recommendation, all you can eat nacho Tuesday $25. Service was excellent. Lay out & atmosphere is great plus kiddy friendly. Food was average. The extra food we got was great though. I would come here again to try something else to eat. Cocktail fruit tingle taste like it should
Great little spot with good food. No complaints at all. Staff were friendly and happily moved us to a booth after we had been seated already. We had a bunch or different party starters to share.
Had to ask for side plates and cutlery, twice. Instant removal of one star. I shouldn’t have to ask for utensils or plates in a restaurant. It should be brought prior to the food. Not five minutes after. The QR code that is used to order food is a joke. You have to sign in and enter credit card information EACH time you want to order something. It just wouldn’t remember my details even after logging in. I gave up. Far too inconvenient. The ordering software needs to be either fixed or completely replaced with something efficient. This was by far the worst QR code ordering experience I’ve had. The staff and service is the only thing keeping this review above 2 stars. They were all great. The food was okay. I had the Mesquite Chicken breast which was well cooked and not dry. Chips were bland. Margarita was perfectly made! Had the chocolate nachos for dessert. Unfortunately they were burnt. Even though they were covered in chocolate. All you could taste was burnt corn chips. Even the cream wouldn’t cut through it.
What a Great Venue!! I really like how the tables are set out to cater for larger groups as well as couples settings. The food was ok..lots of options for share plates. Staff are definitely the star of this restaurant. From seating & table service right through to paying the bill.. staff were delightful.. Special mention and thanks to "Addy" what a gem The atmosphere throughout the venue was great. There was a solo acoustic artist playing live music . His name was Chris Stevenson we met him at the end, was a very nice bloke. His music and a few ales was exactly what we needed to wind down on Friday after a long week. Thanks Cactus Jack's for an awesome night.
We went there for Mother's day night. It was very busy. They had music play in the Marquee outside on the footpath, I found it would had been too loud if you had a table out there. It was just right where we were seated.Service was good, tableservice for food and drinks by waiter or by the restaurant app.Food was delicious, it could had been a little hotter. Frozen margarita were supreme.
Took my sister & her family last night and we all had an amazing experience. Not only was the food delicious and on point, but the service is second to none. Not at any point were we left waiting for service. The restaurant has a warm and welcoming vibe with great and super friendly staff. Whether taking the family out or just heading out with someone else or by yourself , I highly recommend Cactus Jacks. Thanks for an amazing experience to the Cactus Jacks Crew. Kid-friendliness: My niece absolutely loved the kids meal. She chose the nuggets and had the ice cream with chocolate topping. She said it was great.
Sunday 5 June, my friends brought me along to Cactus Jack's, it is one of their favourite restaurants, this place did not disappoint! Ribs were amazing! Sizzling fajitas were delish! Enchilada was unforgettable! Awesome customer service, enticing cocktails and delish dessert which was apple crumble sorry no pic!
Why do i always overlook this place? We had a great feed. I had to ask the staff for a steak knife because the steak didn't come with one, but apart from that everything was top-notch - particularly the staff who were so friendly and happy to accommodate any requests. The jalapeno poppers are a bit different here... they are wrapped in springroll paper and they are AMAZING! We'll be back!
Had our first visit yesterday. Very friendly staff, great service. Food really tasty. The jalapeno poppers were amazing. Chicken wings, Louisiana, also very good. Will be going back soon.
What a great time out with my wife, celebrating our anniversary. The service is top notch. Very short wait for our delicious food to be served. Live music with the very talented Brenden Schick making it a night to remember.
