Buried Village
"The Buried Village is New Zealand's most visited archaeological site where stories of the 1886 Tarawera eruption come to life.Violent and unexpected, Tarawera's eruption was one of New Zealand's greatest natural disasters, destroying our country's very first tourist attraction- The Pink and White Terraces and burying this peaceful village of Te Wairoa.Today at the Buried Village you can experience the stories in our award winning museum, explore the Archaeological Site which once housed the people of Te Wairoa, encounter the unique insights of stories from our tour guides, and take the Waterfall Trail which showcases the stunning Te Wairoa Falls."

It was so interesting to read about the whole event in the museum and then walk around seeing where the homes actually were and how they lived. We didn't do the walk to the waterfall only because it was the end of the day, raining and cold so next time we will hopefully get to do it. However at point 19 the view was amazing. The whole place has a peaceful, tranquil atmosphere.
Great place. Very beautiful scenery with a breath taking waterfall, I definitely will be back again. The letters from Margaret one of the whiteness to the destination hits home to the human cost. A 10/10 experience.
This place has a cool museum where you read a lot of stories about what happened and then you get to see a fantastic waterfall which is well worth the walk to. You need to have OK fitness to do the walk to the waterfall, there's steep stairs.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Loved it, very good piece of our history to have preserved so well! Nice to see lots of improvements have been made since I last went about 13 years ago. Love the walk along the stream, the treasure hunt made it fun for the kids, and the dressing up at the end! Was an awesome morning! There is a bit of walking to do, but that's what we loved about it:
It's was pretty amazing to see what's left. The houses had an energy to them as if you could feel the people who lived there, still around. I didn't to the waterfall walk as my kids were already whinging . Will definitely go back.
The last time I visited was 25 years ago, so much has changed. The museum has a great amount of information and the walk is stunning.
Great place to stop, regardless of age. The younger ones 9 and 12 were entertained with the treasure hunt whilst us adults read all the interesting signs around. The owner family were also lovely.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Loved visiting here. The walk around the village was pleasant with a lot of information around about the people who lived here. Really shows the power of nature too, although sad for the people who called this home / were visiting at the time. I'm so glad the sewing machine in the tree survived, which is now located inside. The walk to the waterfall is very steep and the exit was blocked off due to a slip, so recommend taking this if you're fit and have good knees. The walk is worth it though, with a beautiful waterfall at the end.
Interesting area, with a beautiful waterfall.Great Cafe on site.
Beautiful location, lots of history and scenery is lovely.
