Story

Sydney’s best kept secret

The Brett Whiteley Studio was the workplace and home of Australian artist, Brett Whiteley (1939–92).

The artist bought the former warehouse in 1985 and converted it into a studio and exhibition space. He lived there from 1987 to 1992, the year he died in Thirroul.

The visitor is offered the unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the space – the studio with his unfinished paintings, art equipment and collections of reference books, and the graffiti wall covered with quotes and images.

The living area has memorabilia such as photographs, objects, postcards, furniture, his music collection and sketchbooks. The gallery has changing exhibitions of the artist’s works: paintings, drawings, sculpture and graphics borrowed from the Brett Whiteley Studio Collection, Art Gallery of New South Wales and private collections.

There is a small gallery shop with postcards, posters and other merchandise for sale. There is no cafe at the Studio, however visitors are welcome to return on the day after visiting the numerous cafes and restaurants close by.

Love this place, if you are into his art. Residence and Gallery space of the late Brett Whiteley sculpture and painter.

While this gallery is hidden down a back street, it's a lovely little gem. A rotating schedule of themes give one an insight into the various subjects and themes of Whiteleys work. The gallery is big enough to make the visit worth while but small enough to create a sense of intimacy with the artists life and his works.

Quite a good well run gallery of Brett Whiteley works. Often they will pick some aspect of Brett's and choose works which focus on that i.e. currently they have a lot of bird paintings that Brett did. Birds feature a lot in Brett's work and it nice to see more paintings of them

You must visit the Brett Whiteley Studio - the art is so varied and intriguing. Thoroughly enjoyed the bird exhibition.

It's fabulous. There's always something interesting to see, if only because they have ALCHEMY right at the front. The staff are lovely. The music on Sundays was a great idea and hopefully still is. I deeply enjoyed his portrayal of Oberon and further west. We've been missing him for twenty-five years.
