Story

Warrnambool Botanic Gardens are a timeless and tranquil setting for weddings, picnics, peaceful walks and the many guided tours and special events hosted throughout the year.

Set on 20 acres of lush parkland just a short walk north of Warrnambool’s CBD, the gardens feature hundreds of native and exotic trees, ferns, flowers and other plant species.

Warrnambool Botanic Gardens are also home to a significant collection of historic structures, including an original sandstone shed once used by the garden’s first curator Charles Scoborio, now the headquarters of the Friends of the Gardens.

Other highlights include the naval cannon – one of 15 used to defend Victoria’s coastline in the 1800s, a band rotunda, ornamental lake and stone bridge.

The gardens were designed in 1877 by Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens director William R Guilfoyle.

At that time, the area was heavily timbered with a dense undergrowth of scrub, ferns and tussock grass.

Guilfoyle’s plans saw the land transformed into impressive gardens of his classic style - wide curving paths, large sweeping lawns dotted with specimen trees, glimpses of water, dense shrubberies displaying a rich variety of plants and focal points composed of plants of dramatic form and colour such as Doryanthes, Palms and Bamboos.

By the end of the century additional attractions had been included: a fountain with gold and silver fish, a fernery, rockeries, several aviaries and a number of animals such as monkeys, kangaroos, wallabies and guinea pigs.

The aviaries of birds and the collection of animals have long since disappeared, but the restored fountain and fernery continues to delight.

A trip to Warrnambool is not complete without a visit to the delightful Warrnambool Botanic Gardens.

Beautiful space that’s perfect for a short stroll. For locals it would be a tranquil spot for a picnic, some reading in the shade or meditation. Appreciate the foresight and history of someone in 1866 creating this garden. Well done to those who maintain this for all to enjoy.
Pretty manicured gardens just a short walk outside the town. Beautiful pond with fish. Best time Spring flowers! Bats are a bit scary haha. Small garden so doesn’t take long to look around but worth a look.
Warrnambool Botanical Gardens is a beautiful place to have a walk, picnic, enjoy the nature, or all of the above. It'd be great for families with kids. Before heading there, I imagined it to be bigger than it was. You can walk in and around the paths in about 30 minutes. But if you stop to, "smell the roses", so to speak, you could enjoy a good few hours here for sure. Parking is aplenty nearby also. Some of the trees here have some huge girths. Very Thanos-like! There is even a secret maybe not so secret rainforest area with ferns. It was quite a surprise to see a few Seagulls acting like ducks in order to get food too!
Beautifully kept gardens and lawns with plenty of shade to enjoy a picnic. A nice play natural play zone for the kids aswell. Only flaw was no signs for the toilets which were in the opposite direction of where we entered so took a fair walk to find. Great spot
Very beautiful garden, peaceful place to enjoy your time. Lush green with stunning views and lake with fishes.
A great place to walk around. Good place to have a picnic or to even go for walk. Well kept and maintained.
A beautiful place to take the kids to play, have a picnic or just rest
Its a great place to enjoy your hot days. The mini lake/river with the bridge is so cute. There are also a lot of bats in approx 3 trees so be careful!
Gorgeous local botanic gardens that are teeming with native wildlife. Amazing array of both indigenous and non-indigenous plants to enjoy. A great place to sit and read a book, have a picnic with the family or just take a leisurely stroll on a fine day. Also home to many flying foxes who rest in the trees during the day which makes for an awesome sight.
Lovely quiet, scenic place away from all the concrete, parking meters, noise and roundabouts down the main street. This is a great place to stop and appreciate nature.
