The day we visited was very hot, so most of the animals were deep in the shade. But fortunately for us they slowly came out when the carers came to give the food . The Merecats , Chimps and Cassowary were my favourites. The family of Chimps played and the baby was sticking straw into the fathers mouth then pulling it out, very playful. The zoo is a great size. We don't get up to Rockhampton often but this zoo is a must see. It's free and only asks for donations. Restrooms: Amenities were clean Picnic area: Picnic area is large
Very odd bunch of trees. Still loved it. They have a tropical fruit section. Seems a bit unloved in places and has a strange layout. Trees from all over the place! Even arabica coffee is growing. Lots of birds. I even saw two chickens haha, assuming they escaped from close by housing. Not very busy even on a Sunday, most people hang around the playground or the lagoon.
If you're in Rockhampton then a visit to the Botanic gardens is a must. I would allow at least an afternoon, especially if you have kids. While you're there I suggest visiting the small zoo which is just next door and free. There's a good cafe under huge trees that attract rainbow lorikeets. They sell hot food, cold drinks and there's a souvenir shop. There's also a visitor information Centre and toilets. To reward the kids for all the walking around they'll be doing, there's a really good playground. The gardens themselves are huge with lots of different areas including a Japanese garden, tropical gardens and a war memorial. The gardens are amongst Australia's oldest at over 140 years old so there's lots of very mature trees. There's lots of lawns for picnicking but watch out for snakes!
Always amazed to visit here. Love that it's so well kept. Animals all so healthy looking and gardens so well kept. The shop offers great food, with lovely happy staff. Nice souvenirs.
These are wonderful Botanic Gardens, complete with a free Zoo. We visited on a Sunday morning and it was packed, so perhaps it would be better to visit on a weekday. The lake was alive with waterbirds, including a pair of Black Swan cygnets and a pair of Comb Crested Jacarnas. There was areas undergoing reconstruction, so it should be even better in a few months time.
Between the Japanese Gardens and the Zoo, it was a worth while visit. The grounds are well maintained with plenty of seating around. Great place for families with children.
Lovely little botanicle garden. The lake is beautiful, loads of dragonflies. Nice walk, try early morning or later afternoon. Take a hat. It get very hot.
Lovely tropical oasis in Rocky. Beautiful gardens & great priced Cafe under the huge Moreton Bay fig trees. Definitely worth a visit & allow a few hours.
The gardens are are very nice, tidy and informative. Morgan swamp was nice with birdlife, the redwing flying foxes were interesting, usual smell about thembut the mozzies were bad. Parrots at the cafe were nice too.
My 8 year old grandson and myself had an enjoyable Sunday morning at Rockhampton Zoo. However it was disappointing to find several of the enclosures empty going to be renovated or occupants were "on holidays". This included the Otters, turtles, bird Avery, and eagle who was in another small enclosure. The crocodile feeding and talk was good and the chimpanzees were very entertaining. We could have watched the Meercats all day. Their enclosure had multiple glass viewing areas where the Meercats could be seen up close. All the staff we passed were friendly and the Pathways were clean but many of the enclosures were rundown and in need of maintenance and weeding. This place could attract a lot more people if council, who run the park with free admission, injected more funds into its upkeep. A cafe in the zoo could also do very well.
