Food was good and service was also pretty good, good selection of drinks. The atmosphere would be cool on a busy night and you aren't crammed in. Strange serving choices on some meals, we had plates that were well presented 'American' food others had eclectic American diner baskets. Overall I would recommend and will be back for sure.
My partner and I ordered the fried chicken burger and the Double cheeseburger with one side of normal fries and one cheesy fries. The cheesy fries were the best part, although pricey at $3 extra for just the cheese. The seasoning on the chips was also really nice. Burgers were both good, but nothing to write home about. The service was excellent, with plenty of happy and friendly staff. We will have to come back and try the ribs and loaded fries that other reviewers have commented on. Think we'll leave the burgers to Betty.
UPDATE: Based on a recent trip involving a sub-par burger, limp chips and forgotten wings I am changing to 3 stars. Beer is still good but also took forever. I really want to like this place, but they're making it hard. We went for dinner, and fortunately there was food left. Like most slow cooked smoked places, they will run out of food, that's just how slow cooking works. The food is expensive for the portion size and quality. It's not bad, but better food can be found for the same price. However the staff and atmosphere are great, there's a terrific selection of beer on tap, and the BBQ sauce is delicious. We might go back to try the overly expensive wings and decide then if the 4 star review is warranted.
Service was below average, waited a while to be acknowledged and after ordering a waiter came out asked one couple if the food he held was for them, completely bypassed our table directly next to the one he'd addressed then went back inside, only to return a minute later to give us our order. The food us nothing special. We got the cheese dog picture with chips below the hot dog and the chilli dog pictured chips above the hot dog each was over $15 and honestly not worth it. Most of their 'craft' beers were unavailable also. Won't be back.
I got the beef brisket burger and my wife got the hillbilly chicken burger. They were both really enjoyable. The brisket was perfectly cooked, as was the chicken. The staff were attentive and the service was quick lunch time on a Thursday. My only complaint is that the menu was a touch on the pricey side. But otherwise I'd recommend eating here.
Have had 2 extremely negative experiences. Won't be having a third. For a menu with such promise, the extremely long wait times and complete lack of care by the kitchen staff completely ruins any promise the menu may have held. Childrens meals riddled with cayenne pepper. Tough, dry, glued to the bones ribs. Chicken schnitzel made of thigh fillets and burnt to a crisp. For an american themed restaurant the 300ml glass of softdrink for the same price as 1000ml from the german restaurant not even 10 metres away is a joke. Menu looks amazing, even though it's extremely over priced, but could benefit from removing all the things the kitchen can't actually cook to an acceptable standard and maybe focus on getting a few meals up to the standard the price point would imply. 2 strikes and 230 dollars down, let's just say I'm not that keen on supporting a business that doesn't focus on customer retention as much as it does on extracting as much profit from the one time or in my bleeding heart case, two times a patron would attempt to eat here. 1 star rating due to my second visit the kids meal was actually edible the first time round. Sadly it was the best meal on the table. Side note; the coleslaw is nice
In seeing the low rating AFTER eating here for lunch today 1pm on a Tuesday, it was pretty quiet to be fair, I had to finally get off my butt and make my first review in ages. I ordered the chicken burger and loaded fries. The chicken burger was by far the best not only chicken burger, but potentially any burger of any type i've ever had. the chicken was so tender it melted away with no force, perfectly prepared and cooked. The only small negative is the buns weren't warmed, but the chicken was so damn fresh and hot it wasn't bad like it normally would be. The slaw was slaw, did the job it's supposed to do. The star of the show of both the burger and the loaded fries: THE CHEESE SAUCE. have you over the years, like myself, found yourself ordering dishes with cheese sauce and been bitterly disappointed every time? BE DISAPPOINTED NO MORE. It's everything you can possibly want. It's viscous bechamel, it's cheddar cheesy, it's warm, it's everywhere. ITS ACTUALLY CHEESY. The loaded fries being pulled beef brisket and smothered in cheese sauce, the brisket was smoky and tender and deliciously beefy, and the cheese sauce.. well, see above, practically a well of the stuff. Only regret i have is not getting cheese sauce on the fries included with the burger, i'm too conditioned to 'cheesy fries' being nothing more than plastic cheese sadly sloppy on top of some fries. This place definitely doesn't deserve the bad reviews it's gotten so far, probably teething issues? I'll be returning to try the mac n cheese schnitty.
Great place to hang out with a couple of friends. We did visit in the afternoon when it wasn't as crowded. Unfortunately they were out of brisket but all the other dishes we ordered went don't well with the tap beers.
We had an enjoyable night here but was disappointed by one of the weight staff who advised us that a kids meal was too small to share after advising her our kids didn’t eat much. Needless to say we did have to take a lot home. Our meals were good and very large however one of our meals was quite burned and tough. They decided not to charge us for that meal however it was a shame as we weren’t able to finish the meal because it was too tough. Lucky we all had big meals so was able to share our meals with each other. Not sure if I will come here again too soon. Their gluten free meals were quite limited as not all were able to cater to a coeliac.
My coworkers and I used to come to Bootlegger almost everyday after work, not only for their awesome craft beer and their happy hour, but we got to know the staff who were always there and they all knew what to start pouring for us as we walked in the door. We usually always got greeted by Jan who knew his stuff about all the beers and always made us feel really welcome, and almost seemed excited to see us - he is a really cool guy and it was awesome to get to know him, if we knew where he worked now then we would definitely consider drinking there instead. When we didn't see Jan, we would get to see Tom who I think was the manager but he knew more about beers than anyone I've ever met, he always looked quite busy and rushing around but even when he was busy with other tasks he always made the effort to come and say hello, check on us personally - I also used to see him repairing furniture in the restaurant which was pretty interesting to watch. There was also a young girl named Chloe I think she knew a lot about the beers also which was pretty impressive, she always remembered exactly what happy hour snacks we wanted and how we liked them which was nice and she would often get the chef to cook food for us when the kitchen was closed which was great as we are always starving after work and need those $1 wings! We really miss seeing those familiar faces, it doesn't quite feel the same anymore since they started closing during happy hour half the week and the smaller menu - I will say the two young guys that are there a lot now One has a top knot and the other always has a hat on they are really great guys who try their best to look after us but the new girl doesn't really make the same effort the two guys do or make us feel as welcome as Jan used to, she often just disappears out into the kitchen somewhere. We miss those 3 familiar faces and I hope that Bootlegger can go back to what it was before the change in management, bring back your happy hour everyday, get some more staff like the old team and bring back the hot dogs!
