Lovely PlacenTour guide was awesome her name was Carolyn highly recommend nShe even let my partner and myself do a bit of spirit detecting..nIt was all in all a great experience..next time will have tea at the tea rooms the Devonshire tea looked and smelt amazing!!nGet in and give this a visit it's worth it nGold coin donation and all the proceeds go to the upkeep of the house itself..
So glad I resisted the temptation for such a long time whenever I started my favourite Bay Trail walk here - to look up online why this suburb was named Black Rock instead of Red Bluff after the stunning iron oxide cliffs nearby.. Finally got to visit the place that held the answer..You can't miss the location - massive majestic Moreton Bay Figs & signage is highly visible on Ebden Ave.nnWhat a magnificent home it is! Kudos to the Friends of Black Rock volunteers who meet & greet visitors in period costume & with abundance of good humour . The optional Devonshire tea at Tamar's Tearoom book ahead for this is excellent value for $15. Special mention: The flavoursome home made jam to go with tasty hot scones in baskets, attentive tea/coffee service with pretty doilies & floral cups.nnThe period details of this holiday home built in 1856 for Charles Ebden - parliamentarian & first Auditor General of Vic has been painstakingly restored especially the floor to ceiling wallpapers & the stone walls..I won't give too much away. Amazing to find such a home surviving intact especially in sought after bayside suburbia - I almost believe the lingering spirit of servant Annie watches over it...Open on first Sun of the month - tour runs every 30 mins from 1 to 4pm - donate to continue this heritage for future generations. Allow an hour with Devonshire tea. There is also a paranormal/ghost tour - enquire.
We had a very nice time on our tour and then scones with jam and fresh cream. It’s all run by volunteers, they had an extra busy day and were run off their feet. Parking can be tricky, it’s a residential area, and very close to the beach. Scones were delicious.
Lovely time visiting the house.nA very interesting history.nIt was smaller than we would have expected, and lot of furniture, items etc don't originally belong to the house, but very interesting none the less, and will put together, with their own stories!nFriendly helpful and very well informed 'staff' dressed as in the day, with wonderful stories, including tantalising ghost stories!nThere's also a paranormal tour you can take at night, or book in for a seance!!! nApparently the 2nd most haunted building in Melbourne!nEasy to get to and park, with an enjoyable Devonshire tea, we had a great time!
Lovely gardens in what feels like a little secluded area. Good place to stop and rest when on a walk.
