Big Splash Waterpark

Story

Big Splash is a waterpark in Canberra, Australia. It is located in the suburb of Macquarie and is the only waterpark in Canberra. It originally opened with a 50m Pool with a kids pool at the end of it in the late 1960s.When the pool opened it was Government-owned and known as Macquarie Swimming pool, also often referred to as Jammo Pool. The slides were introduced in the early 1980s.The pool was sold from government ownership. It was bought by a family and then later sold to the Watkins family in the 1990s.The current name for the facility is Big Splash Waterpark. It now has a total of eleven water slides - the Family Slide and the Kamikaze slide that extend downwards from the top of Splash Tower, The Hurricane Twins that begin at the Splash Viewing Platform. Big Splash includes a children's area called Splash Island which includes 3 slides and playing area. There was the Yellow Bubble pool for toddlers, which had two small water slides landing into shallow water. However this was removed in the 2014/2015 season and a new playground was installed for smaller children. There is also a Learn to Swim Pool and a 50m Pool. Big Splash also has a dry Inflatable Obstacle Course for Children, and wet Inflatable Obstacle Courses for Adults and Children.Following the 2010 closures of the Speedcoaster and Twister slides at Wet'n'Wild Water World on the Gold Coast, Watkins personally purchased both rides for $1.5 million. The rides were installed in 2012, but red tape delayed their opening until 2013. The slides were actually purchased for much less from Wet N Wild however installation costs were high.

The facility is good. Since this is one facility and the other closest one is in sydney, I'm sure the authority can do a lot more to attract a greater crowd. 1. They could serve halal food in the cafeteria. Then it could address a bigger chunk of society. 2. The changing room renovation. It could be actually a changing room , with changing rooms . Right now there are lavatory and shower place. But no separate room for change . I understand by some culture they don't mind. But since Australasia is growing being multicultural. In many culture it is not that prominent to change clothes in front of others. 3. Few more shady tents always a good idea. As all of us know sun is very generous particularly in Canberra. 4. Few more mortgages of slip slop and sunnies would be a change be appreciated by all. And lastly but not least at least one form fountain with various position of drinking water refill facility. Currently one can drink with a vertical fountain. But not everyone is fond of it. To make it more effective in regards to registration I bet every day guests would appreciate it.

The slides there are: 2x twister/fast green enclosed slide (hold your nose and clench your thighs), 2x fast two person riding on a inflatable slides, 2x looping around the tower slides- red and blue (blue is great for your first slide as it's not enclosed and is a gentle ride). Other than that there's two preschooler/ adventurous toddler slides and two toddler slides where parents can stand beside them (in the pool). The slides close an hour before the park closes and the shop before that. The tower smells bad (could do with some disinfecting), but is bearable, to get up to the red and blue slides. The water at the end is shallow enough for shorter kids to stand up in. Staff were diligent in the timing of letting people go down each slide (with the exception of the blue and red where there is a light indicating when to go). There are lockers, which is handy (take gold coins). All up it's a good balance of thrilling and fun. Recommend for primary- aged kids.

Overall a fun water park for all ages. Spending a couple hours here is great with fun slides and a 100m pool. Thought the lifeguards could be nicer. As this is a family water park the lifeguards should not be swearing near children.

There are a few life guards that are very kind and interactive. I have witnessed a man working there speaking to other employees with complete disrespect because they nicely asked him to pump up one of the flooms (which I had witnessed him pumping them up when the slides were being turned on). The tower for the red and blue slides smells absolutely vile and I’m sure it hasn’t been cleaned in years. The prices of this place are quite expensive ( $115 for 4 kids) Besides all of that the place is decent and is mostly clean except the tower and there are lots of shaded areas for putting your property and lockers (bring gold coins). My experience there was good fun!

This place has grown since I was a teenager! There's a number of slides for kids and adults and a lap pool available also. The kid's slide water was quite cold though... great day out with the family!
