Lauren helped me on my first day in Australia and in Nomads booked my whole east coast trip, so helpful and very knowledgeable on the best things to do and see highly recommend giving her a visit to book your trip.
Me and my boyfriend started our working holiday here, couldn't recommend a better place to start! Ideal location, staff super friendly and helpful, prices are high but that's to be expected given the location. We opted for the double en suite room but I reckon it'd be ideal for solo travellers as well due to it being super social with lots going on!
Nightly events make this place the best for solo travelers. Isaac and the whole reception team are welcoming and super helpful. The kitchen is large and cleaned throughout the day. They offer free breakfast and that girl Sarah makes the BEST pancakes.Rooms: 5/5
Good hostel if you love the nightlife and partying. Location of St Kilda is really good. Plenty of shops and restaurants with CBD 20 minutes tram ride away. Cons - Kitchen & dining area is only open until 11pm so lacking in areas to socialise such as a games room with comfy sofas. Not the cleanest of hostels, one bathroom/shower per room of 8 people
Good hostel if you want to party as always something going on. Room was decent size but bathroom could do with a clean. Kitchen facilities were okay but was messy due to the number of guests closes. Can't take your own alcohol into the common area which was annoying as the drinks weren't cheap.Rooms: 3/5
Stayed at this hostel a month ago coming in on a trip from Berlin. I was expecting a party hostel where everyone was social but it was not that. Firstly everyone in the main room is glued to there iPhones which is strange cause I thought it was a social hostel. Secondly as a solo backpacker don’t get your hopes up that the bar crawl or other events organised will be your ticket to making friends, I tried countless times to talk to people but all I got was a polite convo that when nowhere or 1 word replies so they can get back to there friends This hostel is not as socially open as advertised. Stay here for sure if you are coming with a group of friends or partner you will definitely have fun, but if you are a solo backpacker, you’ll more then likely be socially isolated for the duration of your stay so I’d recommend looking elsewhere.
The location is okay, close to public transport. The room is nowhere near insulated. Air comes in through the window all the time and the door might as well not have been there, you could hear everything out in the hallway. People are drunk almost every day and make a lot of noise. If you come to party and can sleep through all the noise, this hostel is for you
Staff were friendly but unfortunately there were so many issues. My bedding wasn't very clean, shower water is often just warm, kitchen has no good air circulation, and the list goes on...
If you are a person who enjoys a quiet night in, reading Dostoyevsky on a bear rug by the fireplace with a fancy glass of Beaujolais - this place might not be the right fit for you. If you are a back packer arriving in/staying in/passing through Melbourne though, GIVE BASE/NOMADS YOUR MONEY!!! First off the location - 5 minutes from the beach, right by Acland Street which has everything you might need and Chapel Street not to far off either. Trams 16 and 96 will get you to CBD Central Business District in 20min. Also there is a shuttle bus from the airport that drops you off not too far from the hostel as well. As to Nomads/Base itself - you will have an absolute blast. Especially on Monday nights - one word: BINGO. Tuesdays you get to drive Mario Kart while „intoxicated“. Trivia nights on Wednesday with awesome prizes to win, after a trip with Lisa to Victoria Night Market. On Thursdays it‘s all about coordination during beer pong. And then there‘s the weekend, which wont feel „special“ at all when your whole week has been awesome already. Nice dorms with lockers locks sold at reception and ensuite bathrooms which get cleaned everyday, spacious kitchen with an army of fridges. Quick highly efficient washers/dryers. Yummy pancakes for breakfast included, computers by the entrance if you didn‘t bring a laptop with the possibility to print out CVs. Free wifi throughout. Pool table smack down in the middle, a bar open from 3pm till late with DJs that bring out tunes that will make you want to show off your awkward/awesome moves on the dance floor and of course a travel agency too, if you want to book a trip somewhere. I arrived at Nomads/Base a month ago and while looking for a flat/room for myself, keep booking weekly in advance, because as long as I don‘t have „my own space“, I will gladly stay at Nomads/Base and not go to another hostel. I had to change rooms in between though, because the first one had to be renovated but hey, they care, you know… Last but not least the staff: from Danny to Isaac who coordinate the place, to the guys and girls at Reception who will get you settled in a flash, to the maintenance guys, cleaning ladies and room service Josh - everybody is just bloody awesomely genuine and do their best to accommodate your needs and requests when it‘s possible. BIGGEST SHOUT OUT TO AVAN from reception who went out of her way to help me with my RSA in her free time. THANK YOU <3. As amazing as the staff are, so are the people that pass through here. Some are „long term residents“ like me. Some come for a night or two and some a returnees because Base is simply the best. You may stumble across people who are a bit inconsiderate of others, but you will also have a cavalry of friends that you will meet in this place instead. A buddy of mine who did W&T years ago, recommended Nomads/Base to me and I‘m so happy he did because I could not have hoped for a better start to my own journey and I will advise any of my future friends who will want to visit Australia to definitely check this place out. Because when in Melbourne do as the „Nomads“ do… :
People in dorm rooms are super friendly and you make friends fast, Boozy Bingo on Monday Nights is the best!!!! Staff are really friendly and helpful, I arrived starting my Working Holiday Visa and they helped get me on my feet. Most appreciated! Thank you!!! Dorm rooms are beginning to come alive with people from all over the world. As a Backpacker, it's great to see the world returning to some level of normal again. Thank you Base! I will definitely be returning! Merci!
