Barron Valley Hotel

Story

Barron Valley Hotel is a heritage-listed hotel at 53 Main Street, Atherton, Tablelands Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Hill & Taylor and built from 1940 to 1941. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 5 February 2010.HistoryThe Barron Valley Hotel was constructed in 1940-1941 and is located on the main street of Atherton. The site has been used continuously for hotel and accommodation purposes since 1890 and illustrates the role played by early hotels in the development and expansion of regional settlements. The present hotel, with its distinctive streamlined decorative detailing in the interior public spaces, has been run by the Nasser family for over 70 years.Early European settlements on the Atherton Tablelands developed along the route from Port Douglas to the Herberton at Granite Creek near Mareeba, Rocky Creek near Atherton and Scrubby Creek near Carrington. Atherton, which takes its name from pastoralist John Atherton, was originally known as Prior's Pocket after Thomas Prior, a timber getter who was the first European to camp there permanently. The settlement grew to shelter men engaged in lumbering operations, including four brothers from the Mazlin family who played a key role in the local timber industry; much of the timber they cut was used to construct Atherton's early buildings.

What an awesome place. Just like going back in time to the 1930's. The interior is all art Deco and in great condition. The food the first time was fantastic but the $39 eye fillet was full of sinue.
Old art decco hotel on the main street. We gave it a try as we saw it is dog friendly.nnWe sat in the rear eating area which is clearly a covered courtyard open to the outside, but protected from the elements. In this area, dogs are allowed as are the sparrows which forage around the empty tables. We don't mind this as we have been mugged by kookaburras at a golf course restaurant but it might put some people off.nnThe food portions were large, my wife had buttered chicken which was too much for her to eat. My issue with the food is that I had a burger and despite being told it would not be a brioche bun, it was. In retrospect, I believe that the server did not know what brioche is. If I had known this, I would have ordered something else. I don't like brioche for burgers as the bun falls apart with the moisture from the salad and burger juice. We will be back if in the area again, just not for the burgers
Great old style country pub, we had a pizza, and it was great value as well as taste great.
The rib fillet at the Barron Valley Hotel is a sensation. The BV has a unique local family-oriented paddock-to-plate value-added system. Mike and Maree Nasser’s son James grows out beef cattle on his property outside Atherton. This is processed at nearby Rocky Creek and the cuts are provided direct to the BV to put on your plate. Grassfed beef has a much different flavour and texture than grain fed. Easy to cut and melts in your mouth. I took my beef-eating family to the BV for the first time the other night and they reckon it was just as good as any beef they’ve eaten at expensive restaurants in Brisbane. The BV has been run by the Nasser family for nearly 100 years and this explains the first-class service and hospitality. A big shout-out to the lovely Amy who took our orders.
Barron Valley Hotel is a lovely pub with friendly and outgoing staff. The food is delicious. Great value for price with very generous servings. I ordered the crumbed lamb cutlets which were cooked to perfection. My partner ordered the steak which is grass fed locally. Would definitely come back.
