A cute little cafe with an awesome plant based menu. I had their delicious double down and was super impressed with the flavours and texture of the fricken aka "chicken"! Rivals the best plant based restaurants I've visited in Auckland and overseas. As an added bonus, the chef came out to have a chat and not only is everything made from scratch, but they're his own recipes! Kinda bummed that means they won't be available anywhere else. Definitely plan to be back when I'm back in town.
Friendly staff. Delicious vegan food that's reasonably priced. Veg Lasagne that was gluten free with side salad $11.50. Variety of cabinet and menu food. They don't charge for non dairy milk in hot drinks. One of the best vegan places I've been to. Great location right near the plaza
Didn't taste great but also didn't taste awful. Food came to us relatively quick and was very clean. Had the snickers drink, tropical drink and nachos. Drinks were pretty nasty.

I wish I had a photo of what I had because it was beautifully presented. I ordered a vegan/gluten free brownie and a banana nut smoothie. They were both really nice, especially the brownie! I really appreciate that despite focusing on making vegan food, they also cater for gluten free people. The lady behind the counter was lovely and offered to take photos on the sofa with me and my friend and offered us free treats. It was a lovely afternoon! Next time I come back to Palmerston North, I will definitely be back. Thank you xx
I had previously left an amazing review, based on our first experience, that was accurate, however after 4 visits to Barley, the last 2 have been extremely disappointing. The coffee has gone decreasingly down hill, and when I went today it was so bitter that it was quite undrinkable. What was really disappointing was the service. We had to correct the order 3 times while ordering as the staff just could not get it right. As it happened, we paid $73.20 for 2 meals and a bowl of chips with coffee which I think is rather expensive, however the worst part was the she didn't put through a whole breakfast. Having been quite excited to try one of the breakfast specials, when it never arrived we found out it had not been ordered. After our last visit when despite a simple request to box up the remainder of our meals we left after waiting 30 minutes and it still not been done, this was hugely disappointing. When we brought the several issues of our brunch experience to the owner, while she did acknowledge that it was her fault, and offered to replace our coffees, we were repeatedly told that the barista was "very experienced" and not once did we receive an apology or any real offer to make things right. The food is excellent, and having a dog friendly environment is something we really valued, but I doubt we will be returning. I really felt that the owner did not take us seriously, not value our custom enough to want to make things right. Such a shame.
LOVE BARLEY! Love the food, love that the menu/cabinet food changes, love the service, and love that they're happy to have behaved dogs inside too! My partner and I love coming in and not having to think which foods could we ask to be veganized like other places. We especially love that they're not all talk and ACTION what they stand for. Don't give a sh*# to the naysayers - we are 100% supporters of your vegan and zero waste standards in your eatery!
Love that there is a 100% vegan restaurant in town, but the gluten free options are minimal. Wish there was more healthy options as well. Pricey for the size too. The decor is nice and the cafe is super clean and luminous which is great. Everything I tried tastes good, but it is just a bit pricey to go on the regular.
As a company wellness event our team went to Barley for a tasty selection of burgers and nuggets all plant based many of our team were surprised at the flavour texture and quality of the ingredients. We were also kindly informed of the health, wellbeing and nutritional benefits of a low to no meat diet. Great evening and a lovely host
