I have been seeing Jane at Barkers Vet Clinic ever since she took over the practice the previous vet was also lovely Jane saw me through the adult to very very senior years of my beautiful cat Grace and is now trusted with the care of my doggo Summer. She is very capable, empathetic and thorough. She calmly accepts that both my pets have been absolute divas and gives great hugs when inevitable bad news has had to be delivered. Thank you so much Jane for your continued care of pets and their humans
I am very frustrated and dissatisfied with this place. I tried to book a vet appointment for my puppy. Despite the pandemic being largely under control, the clinic was still enforcing strict contactless protocols, including locking their doors and requiring appointments to be conducted over the phone. When I arrived slightly earlier at the clinic and called as instructed, the staff member who answered was extremely rude and told me to wait in my car until the actual appointment time. I was then told to drop off my puppy at the door and wait for an email with the results, instead of being able to be present during the assessment. I was very dissatisfied with this experience and would not recommend this clinic to others. I felt very talked down to by Jane.
Our experience at Barkers Veterinary Clinic 2 years ago has left me and my partner feeling disgusted and traumatised. We were initially hesitant to write this review, as we trusted Dr. Jane's judgement as a qualified vet. However, her incorrect assessment of our cat - that he needed to be euthanized after a failed desex operation - has had a lasting impact on us and we still struggle with the trauma of her recommendations. Not only did they fail to properly desex our cat, but they also recommended euthanasia based on their own assessment of our cat's behavior, which was based on metrics such the cat's behavior at the clinic and my 'body language' and 'behavior' at the clinic. While it is true that our cat likely had aggressive tendencies due to being nervous, alone, and in an unfamiliar place before its desex operation like most cats would I can imagine, it's important to note that a qualified vet should be able to recognise and handle such cases with proper care and treatment. It's concerning that the vet used my 'body language' and 'behavior' as evidence of our cat's supposed aggression at home. To make matters even worse, they had the audacity to charge us for the consultation despite their complete failure to perform the procedure. After informing us of the failed desex operation, Dr Jane and Steven was terrible at communicating with us. They would not provide any information other than "he's not okay" which was alarming for any pet owner to hear. They would constantly delay the time we could pick him up and did so multiple times. When he was eventually returned, he was given back to us with cat feces all over him and his transporter. This level of neglect and disregard for the well-being of our pet is unacceptable and added to our already traumatic experience. A few days later, we took our cat to an established veterinary clinic who successfully operated on him and allowed us to be in the same room during consultation!!!, mentioning that he was lovely and required a bit more anesthesia than usual. This only further highlights the incompetence and carelessness of Barkers Veterinary Clinic. After two years of observation, our cat has proven to be gentle and well-mannered and lives happily with another cat - all of which Dr. Jane said would not be possible, which only confirms the lack of competency and professionalism of the clinic. I often wonder how our cat's health and behavior would have been impacted if we had followed Dr. Jane's recommendation to give him daily medication from her friend, which was intended to calm him down. It is unfortunate that Dr. Jane could not see that our cat is now the most gentle and docile animal, without the need for any medication. The clinic itself is small with Dr. Jane and her partner Steven exhibiting a condescending and dismissive attitude towards us as pet owners. Furthermore, their policy of not allowing pet owners to be present during exams and procedures which I understand is still the case in 2023 is not only harsh, but also a clear indication of their lack of transparency and trustworthiness. Our negative experience at Barkers Vet Clinic was reinforced by reading reviews from other customers, which aligned with our own experience of condescending behavior, rude communication with Dr. Jane and her partner Steven, and strange COVID policies still in place. We STRONGLY advise against going to Barkers Veterinary Clinic for anyone looking for quality and compassionate care for their beloved pets. Our experience with them was nothing short of a nightmare, and we would not wish it on anyone else. We hope that our review will prevent others from having to go through the same traumatic experience that we did.
We are new to the area and were trying to find a local vet for our puppy to get a review on his injured paw. We got really surprised with all the COVID contactless precautions still on when normal hospitals already have taken down most if not all of them. I got an email when booking the appointment stating 'Our clinic is continuing with contactless protocols. If you are coming in for an appointment, our doors will be locked. We ask that you remain in your vehicle and call the clinic when you arrive. Please wear a mask when you bring your pet the to the door and your appointment will be conducted over the phone with the Veterinarian.' We arrived about 10 minutes before time, politely, so that we wouldn't be late. We called them once we got to a locked door as instructed, and the person that picked up was extremely rude and told us to go away to our car and that we would get called at the time of the appointment when they were ready. We received a call back a few minutes after and the vet started making questions over the phone. I thought it was a preliminary chat before the assessment. But then we were told to drop our puppy by the door and they would collect him, assessed him and do whatever they needed and then I could pick him up when they were done. She also said that I would received an email with a report of the findings. I found it very weird - so, am I not allowed to be in the room where my puppy is being assessed? Not just because I want to see how they treat my puppy but also because he obviously get more reassured with a known person there. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
I have been seeing Jane at Barkers Vet for several years now and am more than happy with the service, advice and care I receive for my beloved pooch. Jane’s friendly and personable manner puts me at ease every time, she is especially patient with my boy which I appreciate enormously. Jane’s sensible advice regarding diet, exercise and separation issues has also helped me many times over. I have no hesitation recommending her clinic to all.
Jane as a vet is excellent, however the rigmarole one has to go through is ridiculous. Covid rules still apply. We have two dogs so you have to ring them when you arrive, no entering the building, you are then advised they will ring you back. Mind you its August and bloody cold outside, you stand on the street outside and they call you and spend 5 or 6 minutes chatting about the dog then she comes to the door and takes your animal inside. Barkers used to be a friendly, comfortable place to take your pet, now it's a totally unpleasant experience
It would be hard to find more dedicated, compassionate or professional veterinary service than with Jane and her crew at BVC. Three beloved pets and two decades later our fandom is undiminished. Thank you, Jane + Steve.
I came home and burst into tears the experience was so awful! This vet still now half way through 2022 is doing all appointments contactless and doesn’t plan to change that. So I was out on the sidewalk for close to an hour in 10 degrees. The vet was cold, rude, and antagonist! She was not knowledgeable on diet specifics but made assumptions that were incorrect. Told me the puppy school I had enrolled in wasn’t good enough and that I should use the one she recommended. Told me the worming mixture I was told to use by the breaded didn’t cover more than one worm but a quick google proved that wrong! My puppy was so upset she had a nervous attack of diarrhoea. She’s not had that before or since. I’m a new pet parent and wanted to form a good relationship with my vet and hoped the one by my home would be great. I couldn’t have been more wrong! I’ve since taken my puppy to Swan St Vet and they have been amazing! I won’t be looking back that’s for sure!
Would not suggest a female walk in this clinic alone. Came to buy catfood, was met with a screaming man demanding I get out. No sign saying not to enter, just yelling with no explication. Aggressive, absolutely unsafe. If you are a female please be careful.
