Today I visited Hobart and had heard a lot about the popularity of Bar Wa, but honestly, I was a bit disappointed with the food quality.nFor dinner, I ordered the grilled beef with uni and shiso leaf. Unfortunately, the combination did not work well. After finishing the dish, I could barely taste either the uni or the beef — only the shiso leaf stood out.nThe chicken karaage was extremely salty. I am a Japanese chef and have worked in several Japanese restaurants in Sydney, so I was quite disappointed with the karaage here.nThe yakiniku platter was not worth the price.nThe best dish of the night was the smash potato crispy — a simple dish but very well executed and delicious.nThe yellowtail kingfish was acceptable, nothing special.nThe yukke was fairly good, but not outstanding.nI also ordered the Wa Bar Fu salad and kimchi. Ideally, these two side dishes should have been served earlier, but they were brought out almost at the very end of the meal.nFor dessert, I really enjoyed the shiro miso ice cream and the yuzu tart — both were excellent.nRegarding service, one staff member told us that all dishes would come out consecutively, while another said everything would be delayed and served randomly. I believe the team should reconsider which dishes need to be served earlier or later to better build the guests’ appetite and overall dining experience.
Such a truly fantastic dinner ! Got a few things to share, and felt pleasantly satisfied. Drinks were super unique and absolutely delicious; for whisky lovers this place was absolutely perfect. The golden sour was truly one of a kind. Even if the service and food were subpar which they weren’t the design of the restaurant could’ve made up for it. I truly appreciate a restaurant that takes pride in its design & I think that this restaurant does exactly that; it doesn’t falter on creating a unique atmosphere but also doesn’t try to stick out like a sore thumb.
The bar has an original design — a mix of Japanese art and bottles hanging from the ceiling, accented with colourful lighting that makes the whole interior feel vibrant and unique.nnThe share plates were outstanding. Between two of us we ordered the Kosho Granita and Sanbaizu oysters, Eye Fillet Tartare, the Grilled Yellowtail Kingfish Belly, and the Shiro Miso Braised Mushrooms. Every dish was amazingly delicious, but the oysters were the absolute highlight of the evening. The rich flavour and freshness of the Pacific oysters, paired with the beautifully balanced dressing — full of flavour yet light and not overpowering — made them perfect. Probably the best oysters I’ve had so far!
We had a fantastic dinner and drinks at Wa Izakaya. The ambience is absolutely on point — warm lighting, Japanese décor, and a unique display of bottles and masks that gives the venue a truly immersive atmosphere. The space feels intimate and vibrant at the same time, creating a perfect environment for a relaxed night out.nnThe drinks selection is impressive, especially the Japanese whisky range, and the team clearly put real thought into their offering. Dinner was delicious, well-executed, and served with great attention to detail.nnOverall, this is a standout spot for anyone looking for quality food, great drinks, and an unforgettable atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Fabulous little find. Be warned-make a booking!!! We had booked a high table & we were happy sitting there but a booth left & the hostess offered us the booth. Great service, share the platters, you won’t be disappointed. Try the smashed potato, sounds so simple, but very, very tasty. Gyoza-delicious. Karaage chicken-yum. We also had the grilled meat platter, the mushroom, tofu & pancake. All highly enjoyable
