Story

Awastone Riverside Haven is a quiet private campground with a licensed cafe open during the summer months.
It is also the riverside base for Mangaweka Adventure Co, a two generation family owned and operated rafting and kayaking company, that specialises in family fun river trips, kayaking courses and multi-day river journeys.
The stunning location of this venue makes it the perfect setting for all sorts of special events including family gatherings, birthday parties and weddings. The popular Summer Sunday Sessions run from Jan - Apr, hosting various bands and singer/songwriters that entertain guests relaxing with friends and family by the beautiful Rangitikei River.

It rained and poured and the river flooded - but we had an awesome time! Stayed in the budget cabin - as we had a dog - which was old school and basic. Everything is clean and tidy, toilets and shower looked new and were clean. Beautiful spot, we walked over the bridge to the more upmarket site both days and had a great spa. Made friends with our neighbours and joined them for drinks both nights. All in all a great place! Will be back again soon!
One of our favourite campsites. Beautiful views over river & of limestone cliffs.Big swimming hole. Excellent facilities, very clean, kitchen well stocked in case you've forgotten something. Best feature a cafe which serves breakfast,lunch, snacks & dinner.Licensed bar too.Awesome outdoor sitting. Visit Mangeweka township for a step back in time.
Fantastic river views, super friendly staff, very clean and wonderfully kept grounds. After playing in the river the pizza and beer at the cafe went down a treat! Thank you Awastone, you made our family trip super special, your awesome
Met our daughter here for lunch. What a hidden treasure! Beautiful, fresh, tasty food, lovely, friendly service, beautiful scenery, immaculate washrooms. Great coffee too!! Highly recommend!
I decided last minute to drive north from Wellington and to be fair I didn’t think anyone would answer the phone when I called just after 7pm. Paul was great and went out of his way to ensure I had a cabin for the night. It was welcoming to arrive and the lights for the cabin were on and it made it easy for me to spot. The cabin itself is basic but that’s all you need, I didn’t expect a kitchenette so that’s a bonus. For the price it’s good value. Phone reception is surprisingly good which means I can work in the morning from here before setting off. I recommend staying here if you want to break up your trip heading north or south.
Good place for a quick bite. They went the extra mile to offer us a vegan alternative which I really appreciated. They also offer kayaking trips, but we didn't do any.
We absolutely enjoyed our stay at Awastone. We had a beautiful spot for our tent, the facilities were clean, and I really enjoyed the food at the licensed cafe, which meant no cooking for me at nighttime real holiday. The staff, especially Cesar and his girlfriend were amazing and super friendly. We paddle down the river and it is great the Awastone offers a shuttle service which we used. Really really happy with everything and we definitely will be back soon.
Stayed 2 Nov 22 and charged $50 for a non powered site for one night. Maybe the English lass got it wrong but won't be going back. Based on peak rates in hot spots in Central otago over summer this is very high especially for Nov. Plus only 1 person
Nice Family Raft in the River. Had lot of fun with our 5years old girl. Guide did it really well and everything was organised perfect!
My partner and I had the best experience at Awastone. Right from when I first enquired about the packrafting course and accommodation the communication was excellent. Our stay was lovely with views of the river and a very comfortable room. The next day we had an exceptional packrafting experience. Extremely professional and knowledgeable. We felt well looked after and safe on the river. Off the river the cafe provided us an amazing lunch, tea, coffee and cake at the end. It just made the whole day the best. The next day we asked them last minute for a shuttle to raft again and even though they had a big live music event to organise, they were more than happy to accommodate us. All in all Awastone feels like a well loved business that makes you feel at home and comfortable. I hope to be back with a group of friend in the future. High recommended!
