Our History
ATSICHS Mackay provides comprehensive primary and population health care services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in Mackay and surrounding districts. Primary health care services include clinical primary health care, social and emotional wellbeing, and prevention and population health programs and services to the community.
The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (Mackay) Ltd was established in 1978 by the Mackay & District Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community. The purpose of this service was to improve primary health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Mackay regions and as a policy advocacy and development body for all Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people in the Mackay district.
The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (Mackay) Ltd region includes the shires of Mackay, Whitsunday, and Isaac. The Health service is funded primarily by the Federal Government through the Commonwealth Department of Health and Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
The focus of the service is to ensure the Primary Health Care of the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders is equitable to that of the main stream health system.
The organisation is responsible and accountable for the day-to-day operation and management of the health service.
