Story

Founded in 1881, the Art Gallery of South Australia is home to one of Australia's great art collections, housed in one of Adelaide's most beautiful buildings. Located at the heart of Adelaide's cultural boulevard, North Terrace, between the South Australian Museum and University of Adelaide.

Opening Hours
The Gallery is open daily 10am to 5pm (closed 25 December).

Admission
General admission to the Gallery is free. Charges apply for some exhibitions.

Parking
Parking is available opposite the Gallery in the Wilson’s Carpark on North Terrace.

The award-winning Art Gallery Food + Wine restaurant is open every day from 10am to 4.30pm. To make a booking call 08 8232 4366.

The multi-storey building features an impressive collection of artworks from different cultures and time periods around the world. Every level has something unique to explore, making it a great place to spend a few hours.nnThe highlight for our family was the children’s creative room. Our kids absolutely loved it! The gallery provides all the drawing materials, allowing children to create their own artwork in a fun and interactive space while taking inspiration from the exhibits.nnA special mention to the reception staff—the ladies at the front desk were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful. They took the time to provide all the information we needed, making our visit even more enjoyable. Hats off to them for their outstanding customer service!nnBest of all, entry is free, making it an excellent attraction for families, art lovers, and anyone visiting Adelaide. Highly recommended!

The galleries are spacious, well‑lit, and thoughtfully arranged, making it easy to explore everything from historic European works to bold modern installations. Staff are welcoming and knowledgeable, and the free entry plus frequent exhibitions make it a perfect spot for both quick visits and long, slow afternoons. The building itself is stunning, the atmosphere is peaceful, and the collection feels world‑class without being overwhelming — a must‑visit for anyone who enjoys art, culture, or simply a relaxing escape in the city.

Possibly the best collection of 19th century Australian landscapes I've come across. While the gallery is smaller than those in Sydney or Melbourne, the Australian landscape collection feels stronger, with an impressive concentration of outstanding works in one place.nnThe large Tom Roberts and the H.J. Johnstone pair were definite highlights.nnFurther into the gallery is a wall dedicated to Australian tonal paintings. At first glance I spotted a Clarice Beckett, but getting closer revealed they were all Clarice Beckett, 25 in total.nnOne small criticism is that the three John Glover paintings in the first room could really use better lighting.

I love art as much as the next person but maybe a little more as I am an artist myself. Please change up the place...the giant carcass needs to go...and the smell...WHY? It could be such a vibrant and inviting place...

This is currently my favorite art gallery in Australia. The collections are amazing—full of detail, stories, and beautiful colors. The gallery is also quite big compared to others in different states. Would I recommend it? Yes, definitely.Visited January’26-latepost
