After searching for an Art Teacher for many years I’m delighted and excited to find John Lawry. I have just completed 15 months of weekly classes and am looking forward to continuing for another year. I came to class with absolutely no experience in using a pencil or paint in any form. My aim was to develop skills in perspective, shape and form, including linear and aerial perspective, with a view to being able to draw architectural drawings. I very quickly felt comfortable in the class due to John’s casual approach, his generosity and the passion of all his students wanting to learn and support each other whilst having a laugh together. There is a vast range of ability levels within each class and John caters individually to each person, assisting them to achieve their individual aims in whatever medium or style they are working in. John has provided me with guidance and clear instruction enabling me to gradually achieve everything I want to learn, in a very positive, constructive and encouraging manner and environment. His studio is a very stimulating environment and challenging due to the wide age range of students and their various styles and approaches to their individual art. It’s a fun yet serious place to learn amongst others and whilst he caters for specific individual differences of students’ abilities and expressions through their drawing, paintings etc . I very much appreciate John’s analysis of the work I bring in each week to class and his extensive ability to recognise where I’m coming from skill wise, as he demonstrates where I next need to go in my development to achieve my personal aims. John ‘s depth of knowledge regarding the different art mediums and the History of Art in all its complexities is both fascinating and inspirational. I often follow up at the local library as a means to extend my own learning at home. I have also been gradually introduced to the human form leading into a better understanding of the total body drawing techniques in the classical form. Each week I look forward to catching the train and I will often draw on the two hour journey each way to class. Thank you John.

I have been a student in John's classes for the past 12 years. He has been a wonderful teacher and mentor to me, and to everyone else of his many students He has taken me from a hobby painter to a professional artist. I love my time in the studio, and experiencing the interaction , with fellow artists…John is a great teacher and wonderful artist.
