I try to be a calm and reasonable mother. I don’t panic when the kids hurt themselves or get sick - case in point - My older child had a nasty fall off his bike last Thursday and needed to be patched up and X-rays, no problem, got it sorted. However, my 9 month old came down with a fever last Friday afternoon. No worries, manage with Panadol or Neurofen and monitor. The baby has had a mild cold twice before, PCR tested once - negative, he’s teething so snotty nose is to be expected. After 48 hours of constant fever and a temp reading of 39.4 C this morning, decided it was time to see a doctor. The baby hasn’t had to see a doctor yet, never been sick enough to warrant it. I rang the GP Annie Lim Family Practice in Deakin I’ve been taking my older child to for the past 4 years, but GP policy is you can’t come in if you have any cold/flu symptoms because of COVID, you have to do a carpark consult because they have vulnerable patients. But if you’ve never been you can’t do a car park consult because it requires a longer consult. I was advised we would need to have a negative PCR test. Last time I checked a baby with a prolonged fever was a vulnerable patient. So I had the baby and I both PCR tested this morning and then tried to book again under the proviso the PCR was negative. Still can’t get an appointment for same reason as above only option is hospital. To add insult to injury, Lisa the receptionist told me I should have established a relationship with my GP previously and I wouldn’t have had this problem…never mind that I’m a single parent and was on maternity leave at half pay for 6 months and can’t afford to pay an $80 GP consult bill for a social visit. So having had no sleep all weekend I’m now sitting at home debating whether or not the baby is sick enough to justify spending the rest of the day in Emergency…
