Story

The Age Of Fishes Museum houses a collection of Devonian Fish Fossils. This is the only dedicated collection in the Southern Hemisphere!

150 million years before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, almost all backboned animals lived in water, not on land.
This was the Devonian Period or the "Age Of Fishes". A chance find near Canowindra NSW in 1956, and a major excavation of the same site in 1993, uncovered a remarkable fossil site. The site contained well preserved remains of thousands of bizarre, long extinct fishes encased in bony armour, other fishes with lungs and huge predators with crocdile like jaws, many of them new to science.

The most important fossil treasures are now on display at the Age Of Fishes Museum in Canowindra. This unique "window in time" allows visitors to study what happened in Canowindra 360 million years ago. The fossils are supplemented by permanent exhibitions, gift shop, geological time walk, sculpture garden, outdoor picnic area and BBQ facilities. There are many hands on activities in the Museum such as the education den, giant games board, huge floor puzzles and fossil dig pits.

Individuals and groups, please book in advance, are welcome between 10am and 4pm 7 days with the exception of Christmas Day and Good Friday. Other times are by appointment.

"A fascinating insight in to the Canowindra area 360 million years ago. Fossil galleries, interactive displays, garden area with sheltered picnic tables, children's activities and well stocked gift store. The Cabonne shire Visitor Information Centre is located within the Age of Fishes Museum building and is free to access."

Fantastic experience all around. Hard to sum it all up! Excellent fossils and information, including a great kids craft area. Staff were friendly and helpful, outdoor area for kids and picnics is the best I’ve seen in a museum and price very reasonable. A must for anyone passing by.
I think this would be an excellent pit stop for children. The exhibits themselves are interesting for all. There are lots of different activities aimed towards primary school aged children. This museum also has a peaceful and interactive outdoor area, with more interactive exhibits and large painted board games. It is $10 entry per adult and they currently accept the NSW Discover vouchers. In my very personal opinion, I've given 4 stars as we don't have kids and thought perhaps we could have given it a miss.
Very interesting place to visit and lot's of things for the kids and Big Kids to play with. Outside the have several Big Games to play with and more information. Lovely people work there and will give you lot's of guidance. Differently worth a visit. They get extra points for having Big Thing's.
What an amazing find in country NSW. Had never heard of the Age of Fishes museum, and I am absolutely astounded at the fossils found during routine road works. Definately a must visit for rock and fossil enthusiasts.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

A very interesting museum. It is located within the building of the visitor information centre. There is some parking specifically for the information centre & street parking as well. The displays in the museum offer interesting reading. There is a time line display in the visitor information centre's grounds as well. A very interesting place & I do recommend a visit if you are in the area.
Lean about the history of the area, discover the the spectacular collections of fossils. Lean and explore. Very friendly and helpful staff that are more than will to help with any questions.
Fun little museum - well done exhibits and quote interesting. Great visit for kids and any pregistoric history / geological / biology buffs. Helpful staff. Set aside at least an hour to take it all in.
Very informative, plenty of info on the findings of these fishes and even learning games for the kids. Worth checking out.
An absolutely stunning display of fossils and their history. They date back to the Devonian era and beyond. The beautiful thing here is that one can "touchy-feely" many of the displays! This is a "must stop" destination. Want to find out about Climate change? Pull in here and all will be explained. I counted 12 and these had mass extinctions with new life emerging. So carbon emissions may be accelerating this climate change but we cannot stop or avoid it!
