About

At Abesha, time-honoured recipes and the best ingredients are utilised to give guests an incredible dining experience in the heart of Footscray!

Story

Upon arriving at Melbourne’s Abesha Ethiopian Restaurant, you’ll be greeted with a smile by one of the restaurant’s friendly servers, who’ll go out of their way to make you feel right at home. And indeed, Abesha on Footscray’s Barkly Street is so relaxed, you may feel as if you’re in a charming home rather than a busy restaurant. Be sure to take a look at the restaurant’s drink menu, with options like delicious ice coffee and even Ethiopian beer and wine, as you wait for your meal to arrive.

Forget about forks and knives, at Melbourne’s Abesha Ethiopian Restaurant, it’s all about eating with your hands. Along with your order, you’ll be given plenty of injera bread, so don’t neglect to use it as the perfect scooping mechanism while chowing down on your meal. Try out the kay watt, a dish made of chopped lamb in an herb sauce with red onions, ginger root, and garlic, or go vegetarian with the shiro wat, pureed split peas with a red pepper sauce, ginger, onion, olive oil, garlic and a mild berbere sauce. Sample it all at Abesha in Footscray – just don’t forget to book ahead!

I love Ethiopian, and tried Abesha for the first time earlier this week. There was 7 of us and we decided to ask for a combination that we could all share. He brought out two big plates with veggie and meat options, and it was amazing. There was more than enough for all of us. We had an entree too and took our own wine. It ended up being $20 each. Will definitely be returning!

This is the place you go to feed on great flavours for the soul. When you need a mend from a grind you have had during the day. It's beautiful home cooking in a very relaxed and intimate yet open restaurant. I soon focused on a spicy dish and I delightfully ate green peppers that would have greatly tested my stamina but the sauce and the bread gave me the buzz of spice with a citrus tang minus the afterburn feel. The owners are very friendly and will assist kindly with any cultural culinary questions.

Fantastic food and a range of Ethiopian beers to wash it down. Friendly service. Very reasonably priced.
