What we ordered: Cherry and pomegranate soda $5.5 Shoyu ramen $19 + Gyoza Karaage chicken Takoyaki I don't remember how much any of these cost I ordered the shoyu ramen and the noodles were bouncy and delicious. The broth was really nice and savoury but I would still recommend you douse it in garlic and sesame cause it just makes everything better. The pork was also very thick cut and tender, which I loved. I also tried a little bit of the chicken from someone else's ramen but it was very juicy and not dry at all so yay!! The gyoza were delicious, the karaage chicken was super crunchy and still juicy on the outside and the takoyaki never fails. My only real complaints were that the egg was a bit cold and I wasn't a huge fan of the drinks. The food is amazing, the drinks are not except for the calpico soda which is incredible
Great little neighbourhood Ramen restaurant, came here a few times, food standard and services consistently very good. Very well priced for Mt Eden. The highlights for me always are some ramen you can choose up to 4 levels of spiciness, short waiting time and really fresh, delicious appetisers.
We came here on recommendation by our friend from out of town. He reckoned it was the best ramen he'd ever had so we had high expectations based on this. We probably should have ordered the ramen dish he based this off red chilli miso but I'm not a massive fan of spice so decided to give the intriguing 'zoolmen' a go. Unfortunately the expectation did not meet the reality. More of a dry noodle lacking flavour so if you're a fan of usual ramen I would recommend sticking to that. I got to try the one my partner ordered and it was definitely better than my zoolmen so I got proper food envy and ask him to pour some of his broth in mine. The service was really attentive even though we were seated upstairs and couldn't go wrong with a plum wine. Will try to go back and give the stock standard ramen another chance. Karaage chicken was spot on.
The broth of Paitan Ramen is so tasty and chicken is very tender! The ramen noodles have got my favorite texture! Even more, the cheesecake with its super delicious citrus sauce makes this meal perfect Lovely staff and good service! Highly recommend
This is a an amazing unique Japanese Eatery. They have a number of fresh takes on some classic Japanese flavors of Ramen. But they also have a signature style of of dish they call zoolmen. These are Ramen but the broth is reduced into a paste. Making effectively a "pasta". Would definitely recommend giving this a try. They are also currently serving a bitter creme caramel which is also a winner. Will be here again.
In the past we’ve loved Zool but this time I was really disappointed in the Ramen dry broth dish. Apart from the recipe change and taking off the lovely miso chicken the poached chicken serving was abysmal. There was one piece of very thin very processed looking chicken. And it was not very nice. For a $100 total spend it felt like such a let down and that we’d been ripped off. I’m saddened to say I’ll think twice about eating there again.
Being a long term fan I noticed something was different as soon as I walked through the door. It got much worse when my ramen arrived. Sadly the new owners have just missed the mark and I am on the look out for a new favourite ramen shop.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Japan and had a lot of ramen along the way - Zool Zool is pretty much as authentic as it gets for Auckland. I’d go as far as saying it’s one of the top ramen restaurants we have. Today I ordered the Spicy Black Sesame ramen which was the special - it had or level of spice. I know Japan isn’t known for its spicy food and suspected at 4 chillies I’d still find it pretty mild, and it turns out I was right. So while it was very much not spicy, it was still delicious.
Ramen is really amazing, but ony 2 thin pieces of chicken leaves you wanting more. Quantities need to be increased but the food is honestly 10/10.
Was driving around Auckland just couple hours before our flight and decided to have a quick bite here before leaving. A very happening Japanese bar it seems, lots of people came in and out for quick noodles and left. We had a lot of time to kill so we took our own sweet time. They served some interesting drinks too but I did not try as we were both tired and we had to drive. Tried the fried octopus and it was amazing. Their house ramen, chicken soup, I found it to be very bland but the ramen is very good with a slight hard texture like Italian's way to saying aldente. I think it was my mistake to order their recommendation rather than going with my personal favourite the tonkotsu. Having said that, it doesnt mean it's all bad just that my choice for noodle is always pork. The chicken soup is also nice but just somewhat too bland for my likings.
