This place worried me when I walked in.. Menus that are too large scare me. How can a place that offers so many choices do them all well? I prefer smaller menus as it lets the kitchen concentrate on doing a few things really well, as opposed to doing a mediocre job at everything. That being said, I saw the cranking wood fired pizza oven, and decided that was for me. I ordered a pizza with Anchovies, Olives, and Pepperoni, at a reasonable price around $20. Everything was top notch except the wait time. Italian style pizza should only take a couple of minutes to cook, which meant the 20 minutes I waited was primarily for the preparation. Pizza Pomodoro some say the best Italian pizza in NZ usually takes no longer than 5 minutes before you have your meal.
I was disappointed, I had been to the Mt Maunganui Zeytins earlier in the year and was really impressed. Fast service and the food was great. However the Strand restaurant was a disspointment from the get go... unless you enjoy long wait times, being leant over to get cutlery on the table, and conversations rudely interrupted numerous times, I would not suggest going there. The food was ok, not awesome. Found some of the dishes a little small for the price they charged. Add that with the average service I won't be going back to the strand Zeytins.
It was always good here, especially the warm hummus. Closed now but the one at the Mount is still open.
