One of the best beach in NZ, so peaceful, beautiful, serene and beyond amazing.. 20mins walk from the carpark, I was so eager to see this place at the end of northernmost point of South Island and I am not disappointed. The sands are powdered white and pure. I love the sound of the waves, seals are heavily sleeping in the caves, sky is so blue. I would definitely come back!
We had a good time on Wharariki Beach. It was a bit cloudy when we got there and had a 10 minutes nice walk along the trail to the beach. It made me feel like I entered a whole new world in an open space. The beach is so flat, spacious and CLEAN, which just makes you feel like running! So peacefull! We had a long long walk, spotted a couple of seals, very enjoyable. It got sunny afterwards, the view is different under the sun, but I believe you will be enjoying there no matter how the weather looks like. It's just beautiful anyway.
The place is breath taking. So beautiful so unreal. A must go place in NZ. The walk from park is short and enjoyable. I will come back again.
20 mins walk from the carpark. I visited on a cloudy day with light rain and the tide was coming in, so did not have time to walk further down the left hand side of the beach to capture the iconic photos. Best to check the weather and tide on the day. It was still a nice walk through the hills to the beach. Make sure you visit Cape Farewell while you are here too.
Stunning and beautifully wild beach. Seals playing in the pools. Sand sculptured by the wind. Rocks with millennia of layers. Incredible and a must see.
Wharariki Beach is an iconic beach on the Tasman Sea, west of Cape Farewell, the northernmost point of the South Island of New Zealand. The rocky arches and stacks of Wharariki Beach are Paleocene, around 55-65 million years old. The rocks are very distinctive quartz and feldspar rich sandstones with pebbly gravel conglomerates, that are pancake stacked on top of each other. The highlight of Wharariki beach are the seal pups which have made it their playground. They use the pools on the beach to frolic and play in. Everything at Wharariki is large. There are large swells which make it unsafe to swim. There are rips and undercurrents. A rogue wave swept a couple out to sea who were lucky to survive, only after being rescued by a helicopter. It is a one hours vehicle drive from Takaka, followed by a 30 minute farm walk. Or 2.5 hours from Nelson. Over millions of years, the cliffs and islands have been eroded away by the ocean, wind and rain, creating arches, stacks and caves. Travelers tend to explore the family friendly beaches of nearby Abel Tasman National Park, whereas they miss the remote rugged windswept coastline of NZ. The track to Wharariki Beach travels over farm paddocks and through a section of coastal forest, before arriving at the beautiful windswept beach. Have you ever been called an "adrenaline junkie" who likes to go to the edge? Then this place is for you. Walk to Wharariki Beach followed by crossing the stream at the right of the beach, then walk clockwise. Take a walk on the wild side with the hill top coastal cliff walk. Beware of high winds can be very exposed! and sheer cliff edges in this region! Cape Farewell is the northernmost point of the South Island. Walking along the dramatic coastal cliffs will be taking you to edge, not for the faint hearted. You will be able to see part of the Farewell Spit. For the coastal cliff walk, add another 2 hours to your hike. You will reach the viewing platform at Cape Farewell, and most likely to see some seals. You walk back along the Cape Farewell car park / road clockwise to your car at Wharariki Beach car park. There is a baby lamb hanging right on the edge of the cliff, braver than me! Children ask your parents first! Must be supervised at all times. Now I know why it is called Cape Farewell. Keep an eye out for the peacocks at the car park.
OMG! It's like a dream! What a hidden gem if you're not looking, you won't find it. A 20 minutes walk from the Whariki Beach Campground carpark and you'll arrive at a whole new world - big white sandy beach with beautiful landscape and seals sunbathing
This certainly is a special place offering the photographer challenges in all weathers and seasons - but the effort is worth it whatever your skill level.
A short 1km walk across some farm land, native bush and sand dunes to wonderful wild West Coast beach. Beautiful white sand and wild crashing breakers. Well worth the small effort to get there.
This is definitely one of the most beautiful places in the south island. The views from many different points are stunning, specially from the top of the rightmost "island". Despite the required walk from the road to the beach and in the beach, it is a nice place for kids to run around in the dunes. The "pool" with the seals is fantastic.
