Friendly, welcoming Staffs.nA collection of 34 oil portraits capturing the faces and stories of the last tattooed Māori women and also traditional Māori weaving was interesting and beautiful.
Went to see the Te Teko Raranga Ropu and Kuia Moko exhibition. ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR, both of them.nI LOVED the raranga work. So finely woven muka. Blew my mind.nThe Harry Sengl Kuia Moko paintings .... the reality in the eyes of the Kuia he painted was unbelievable. It felt as if they were looking at me. Gave me quite a warm feeling.
Only commenting on the library as I haven't been into the exhibition center. Nice compact library for Whakatane. There is free wifi and computers to browse the internet. There is a wide range of books and subjects from which to choose and a kids corner with little tables and chairs - there's also a selection of audioCD+books. There are plenty of couches & other reading areas and a couple of study rooms that you can book for a few hours. The library itself has self-service checkout/return kiosks but there are staff to help out if it gets busy. You can also 'borrow' ebooks and manage/renew your books online. All you need to join is proof of address any letter or package label will do and photographic ID.
The staff at Whakatane library are so helpful and friendly! The building itself is very large with a huge selection of books. Lots of axcitivies for the kids during school term. Exhibition centre is amazing as well - and free!! Even if you aren't local I recommend stopping in to check it out.
Good exhibition center with Maori and European settler artifacts as well as local arts and crafts. There is historical and geological earthquake and volcano information also.nIt’s well displayed and has informative descriptions.nIt’s free donations accepted.
