Very impressed at how fast it was to transfer from international to local flights in this airport. Our plane had landed an hour late and we thought an hour to transfer would be cutting it fine but instead bags were waiting when we got off the plane. Immigration and customs took barely five minutes and a short walk of about another five minutes and we were at the regional airlines gate with enough time to have a toilet and snack break.
Wellington Airport is a calm and well designed airport near the end of the North Island. Terminal gates are spread apart from left end to right end with International Terminal and Domestic Carriers JetStar and others Gates 21 to 29 and the left side Gates 13 to 17 is all of Air New Zealand flights. The middle part has a clear glass view and overlooks the entire terminal and the aircraft parking lot, gates 18, 19, and 20. Which I believe it is probably charter or private flights, I may be wrong but I have not seen a mandated security screening for those gates, which surprised me.nnIf you go upstairs to Level 2 near the corporate office there is a Police Public Call Box that is still standing, a 3D archicture model of Wellington Airport, and a New Zealand National Airways Corp Model plane with historical photos of a pilot and his logbook and a short historical passage.nnOverall, its a good, mid size airport with not too much crowds, slightly better than Queenstown Airport crowds. It has a twist of articulated theme with some plants, bright LED lights hanging from the ceiling, Macan car display, and possibly an eagle hanging on the ceiling.
One of the few airports anywhere near the city it serves, which makes it so easy to get to and from. Always has interesting decor and currently has an Eagle made by Weta Workshop.
A lovely little airport in the capital with ever changing displays depending on what’s on. This time is World of Wearable Arts and Doctor Who. Although it isn’t a large airport, it’s a combination of domestic and international services with a mix of local and overseas retail stores. There’s also a great selection of food outlets for a coffee and meal during those long wait times. New parking facilities and hotel accommodations are a plus.
Well tou have no choice here, Wellington only has the airport and just like any other airport around the world you'll pay a arm and a leg for anything. Has the run of the mill fast food joints, over priced and rubber food. Eat before you arrive at the airport. Seriously try not to buy anything there unless you like paying more. Parking is free for ten mins then you'll need a bank load to pay for the hour. Typical of any airport. There were lots of taxis on hand but the word is they wont take you if it's a short trip. Renting a rental is easy and cheap.
