Wellington Cable Car

About

Wellington Cable Car is Wellington's most 'moving' attraction and is a favourite among locals and visitors alike.

Story

In 2017, we are celebrating our 115 years of service to the City of Wellington. A favourite of locals and visitors alike, the cable car allows easy access from its terminal on Lambton Quay in the city centre to the top entrance of the Botanic Garden and the Kelburn lookout. Three intermediate stations allow for easy access to local residential and business addresses and at Salamanca access to the Kelburn campus of Victoria University.

The terminus at Kelburn is adjacent to the Cable Car Museum (free) which houses two of the original cable cars. A level two minute walk in the Gardens takes you to Space Place (Observatory and Planetarium) and a free shuttle operates regularly from outside the Cable Car Museum to Zealandia. The Kelburn Village is only five minutes away and the Botanic Garden has a number of interesting downhill walks which take you back to the city centre in about 40 minutes.

"The iconic Wellington Cable Car is the only funicular railway that is still running in New Zealand. Operated since 1902, running between the heart of the city and the Suburb of Kelburn. Enjoy a quick historic journey to the top of the Cable Car to see nearby attractions: the Cable Car Museum free entry, Space Place, Botanic Garden free entry and Zealandia via free shuttle."

Quick and comfortable, less than 5 minute wait for the tram each time. Cheap if you have a Snapper card, even without the price is reasonable. Gorgeous views both from the tram and from the station at the top. Lovely sightseeing place, with easy access to the Botanical Gardens from the top.
The cable car was a blast! We paid only for the ride up — a 6-minute ride offering stunning views of the city, and at the top we enjoyed exploring the well-done small museum. There is a cafe at the top with great views as well. Some people buy return tickets, but we were very happy we chose to walk back to the CBD through the botanical garden and cemetery. It was definitely worth the price of the ticket and it was fun!
Great to have this service from right in the city centre to go up the mountain. It goes every ten minutes and is clean and efficient. NZ$22 for two return tickets. Several options at the top but the botanic gardens are a must, and entry is free.
Great experience to be up on the hills and then walking down the slope to Begonia House and after that afternoon tea break at the cafe next. Thanks to be beautiful weather yesterday.
To be honest the price is fair. Some cable cars are overly expensive. It was definitely shorter than expected it was about 3 minutes but I loved the view when we were near the top. The view at the top was absolutely stunning. I would recommend this definitely because there is a beautiful botanical gardens waiting at the top.
Wellington Cable Car is an absolute must-do! Conveniently located, the smooth ascent offers breathtaking city views. The picturesque Kelburn suburb and Botanic Garden await at the top. Friendly staff and a captivating museum add to the charm. Unforgettable journey!
WOW , we took the cable car to the top and could not believe that this is in the heart of the city. The views are spectacular, it takes about 5 mins to get to the top but there are other options for getting off at two stops along the way and exploring. There is a gorgeous cafe at the top where we had a delightful breakfast. Also up there is the Cable Car history museum which tells you all about it and well worth a visit. Go on get in there and try it yourself
A very good tourist attraction, with the museums and the botanical garden. We had a great time!
I’ve always wanted but until now for our 37th anniversary, I’ve never gone on a charming piece of Wellington character that further reminds me of San Francisco, my favourite USA city and the doppelgänger for Wellington as a whole. In fact, the short ride was made even better by the fact that, if you hold a senior citizen Super Gold card, the round trip to the top and back was complimentary. The perfect background for a lunch overlooking the city at the top.
It’s a small yet a beautiful journey. Very scenic views. And at the top they have really amazing stuffs. It has a great view of the city.
