Wakatu Incorporation
At the heart of our story is movement – migration, exodus. We are travellers. Navigators of the ocean and the land. Our ancient heritage as seafarers of the South Pacific connects us to the nations of Polynesia.
In centuries past we arrived here in a series of epic migrations. Etched in our collective memory, they are central to our identity. We are the People of the Heke – the People of the Migrations.
In 1977 the descendants of the hekenga, now owners of the Nelson-Motueka-Golden Bay tenths reserves and occupation reserves, formed Wakatū Incorporation to administer their land assets.
We have strategically and purposefully designed our organisation around who we are. We recognise the unique opportunities across Te Tau Ihu. Our economic base is diversified into our property business and the products we create from our properties.
With a strong heritage as gardeners and fishermen Wakatū have created brands that celebrate our culture and front our offerings of fruit, seafood and wine. Kono, Tohu, Kiwa and Aronui. Although our products are available throughout world, we remain a family business – a business of families.
At Wakatū we take a proactive stance towards increasing the value of our assets and the prosperity of our owners.
