I love that the buildings are historical, having been moved there from other locations. No two buildings are alike, though the whole outfit is perfectly adapted to camping. I've seen and stayed at lots of camps, from the Top 10's through to scungy places I wouldn't care to visit again and while Waitawheta isn't going to tick the boxes of the elites, I couldn't care less. Waitawheta camp is such a unique place where the adults can enjoy the large north facing covered balcony that gets plenty of sun while the kids and youth find entertainment on the playground, Flying Fox or just hanging out in the 2nd lounge. We found that due to the camps layout and location, the children naturally found ways to make fun for themselves, using their creative minds like we all used to before electronics came to the fore.nThat doesn't mean you can't use electronics, the 4G+ Cellular reception is more than enough, but why spend time looking at the screen when you have a canopy like this. Would I go back? Absolutely yes.
We held our family reunion here in 2022. Just before covid-19 took place and what a beautiful venue. I liked the fact that there was very few mobile coverage because it took all of us off of our phones and socializing with each other. Lovely venue and big rooms
Great simple accommodation for our group of 30 odd. Dormitory rooms but enough side rooms and corner alcoves that everyone got some sort of privacy. Dirt cheap. Old but practical kitchen. And close to the gorge and forest for more than a weekends worth of running. One star off for intermittent mobile phone coverage.
Another fabulous Xmas spent at Waitawheta Camp which was made even better this year with our new Caretakers Rob and Jan Raw who made us feel so welcome from our arrival to our departure. The camp itself has never looked better and is in top condition thanks to their hard work and efforts in trying to maintain a high standard for years to come. They definitely made our stay there more enjoyable and comfortable so our deepest Thanks & gratitude to Rob & Jan on behalf of my Whanau and we'll see you again for Xmas 2019!
Great venue for any event. We spent a lovely weekend celebrating a wedding with friends and family and the space was big enough for almost 100 people.
