The Waitara Railway Preservation Society operates a heritage railway in Taranaki, New Zealand, for the restoration and operation of an historic railway line, locomotives and rolling stock.
The Waitara Railway Preservation Society Was formed in 1999 with the aim of preserving the 7km long Waitara branch line in rural Taranaki. Our society purchased the branchline from Tranzrail and since 2003 we have run excursions over the branch using a mixture of our ex NZR rolling stock.
The train ride from Waitara climbs a 1 in 40 grade (the steepest on a preserved railway in New Zealand), passes under the SH3 over bridge and crosses the picturesque Waiongona Stream.
Train trips run on the first and third Sundays of each month with extra trips run during holidays.
