Wairere Boulders

About

"Wairere Boulders" is a private nature reserve with really cool rocks. Walking trails lead around the boulder valley bringing you up close to this unique geological phenomenon. Kids activities, kayak hire and cafe on site.

Story

“Wairere Boulders” near Horeke is the name for a Nature Park created by Rita and Felix Schaad, in their part of the Wairere valley. There is an agglomeration of hundreds (if not thousands) of huge basalt blocks covering an area which is 1800 m long and can reach a width of around 250 m. The valley is not only of geomorphic interest and stunning to view, but also the weathering on the basalt surface shows flutings or lapiez and solution pits of outstanding size and beauty.
Easy walking tracks lead over 25 bridges, ramps, stairs and steps up to a platform to enjoy the view over the Wairere valley.
Routes can be chosen on the way. Slow walking times are between 40 min to 2 hours.

A fun unique experience and great with our 6yo. The path is well marked and there are signs informing you about the plant life and Kauri trees. Definitely worth a stop.
Awesome spot with great hospitality. Just magical. Highly recommend!
Love this place. Great options for all levels of fitness. Neat information notes around the walk and tree identification
Amazing place 8th wonder of the world few will get to see the beauty and feel the feelings I was privileged enough to experience .
A nice walk. The owners have done well constructing the trail and have provided a lot of detail in terms of history of the area and information about the boulders. I imagine that geologists would think it is well worth the $15.
Started with coffee and scones, served with lovely homemade jams and pickles, We loved the walk, amazing rock formations . We will be back again,!
