Story

Hot Thermal Pools…… geysers, hot pools, boiling springs, mud craters and mud baths with peculiar healing properties…

Quotation; Wairakei the Wonderful, published in 1919

Significant natural thermal springs; mud and silica waters found in geothermal areas have been used for hundreds of years by Maori for healing and wellness. Specific sites were often located in beautiful landscapes, at the junction of rivers and streams, on the shores of pristine lakes and below magnificent silica terraces.

At Wairakei Terraces, pools of varying temperatures between have been strategically positioned below the silica terraces and waterfall, taking full advantage of the geothermal water flow that is drawn to the earth’s surface from 1.5 kilometres underground.

These mineral enriched pools, soft and silky to the touch and striking blue in colour, provide the perfect setting for complete rest and relaxation.

With the reinstatement of the ‘Te Kiri o Hinekai’ stream in 2002, many native birds have been attracted back to the area, their calls and songs are melodious to the human earand are in harmony with this natural setting of cascading and flowing water, gushing geyser and billowing steam.

An evening activity offers a rare opportunity to experience the very cornerstone of Maori custom and culture, participate in a traditional welcome conducted by the local Maori people in their traditional costume, a guided tour of a Maori village naturally lit up at night, and featuring carvers, weavers and tattooists displaying the ancient arts of Maori. Partake of a traditional ground cooked meal (hangi) and enjoy a concert of song, dance and haka. This experience is intense, powerful and emotional and will leave the visitor with lasting memories of a culture that is alive and growing.

What a beautiful experience we had here, though we did not bathe, the scenic walk and embellishments of this facility are quite magical. It gives you an impression of what the pink and white terraces were once like. The bathing pools looked absolutely wonderful and inviting.
Absolutely amazing. The young Maori girl on reception was absolutely beautiful and so very helpful. I would recommend this place to everyone. Can't wait to go back and go into the beautiful looking pools and have a stone massage. Loved it...
Very nice and calm experience. The different pools are spacey so you don't need to get close if you don't want to. The hottest Pool is quite the muscle relaxing boiler. But couldn't stay in there for more than 10min. Also the walk around the Maori experience was nice. Cool geyser. Nice views and pictures worthy. All in all... a nice and relaxing experience for half a day to have a break between travelling.
What an amazing place! So glad we came to this thermal pool! We also went on the Terrace walk! Ended coming both days for the thermal pool because it was so nice! Once earlier in the morning and the other day later in the afternoon. Definitely worth the visit!
Such an awesome place to go and the staff their were so awesome and welcoming. I wish i remember the name of the woman that let me and my partner in closer to close and was just so kind and accommodating. Shout out to her!
It is a boutique hot springs. Four pools with increasing temperatures. When we arrived at 10 AM and for the next 2 hours it was not at all crowded. You can rent a locker and towels but there are places to put your things near the pools where you can keep a close watch on them. We have been to the famous Blue Hole in Iceland and though that is a completely different experience, our visit to the Terraces will be every bit as memorable.
A lovely retreat location. Only went for the a trip to the walkway. It was only $7 a adult on grab one which made it a cheap activity. Took us about half an hour to walk around. Even though the terraces are man made they are still quite spectacular. The "Maori cultral experience" aspect did feel quite un authentic. The pools look nice and spacious as well.
Amazing place! A must do in Taupo. All the pools are different temperatures which is really great. Large pools so you never feel crowded. Highly recommend.
We stayed around the corner and went to Wairakei Terraces twice. First day we enjoyed the pool then the second day we decided to do the hīkoi. The hīkoi is beautiful. You can take as song as you want. We took longer than we had planned.
Lovely tourist spot to stop at and spend a few hours on a wet cool mid summers day. The amenities building appears to be resonably new, and very well kept, as we're the four different temperature hot pools. These pools ranged in temperature from 32 degrees C to 41 degrees C, with the temperature being monitored on a regular basis by one of the maintenence personal. Also a nice Cafe on site for refreshments as well.
