Worth stopping off to check out a geothermal generator commissioned in 1958 - currently 175MW capacity made up of several units
A great stopping spot to understand how New Zealand uses the thermal energy to produce power. A great introduction for children and adults alike. Make sure you follow the capturing process by visiting the Thermal Walk clearly signed on the way back into town 500 metres away. Also the Wairakei Geothermal Station View Point behind the Wairakei Terraces & Thermal Health Spa!
Needs a picnic area but great leg stretch spot for humans and dogs!
Good parking no over nighting though.
Good viewing platform,lots of steam kids will love it
