Story

Waipapa Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse located at Waipapa Point, Southland, New Zealand. It was first lit on 1 January 1884.
The lighthouse was built in response to the wreck of the passenger steamer Tararua on reefs off Waipapa Point on 29 April 1881, with the loss of 131 lives. With its sibling, the retired Kaipara North Head lighthouse, this was one of the last two wooden lighthouses built in New Zealand.
The lighthouse was automated and keepers withdrawn in 1975. It has been solar powered since 1988. A new LED beacon was installed externally on the balcony of the lighthouse in December 2008. Restoration work conducted in 2008 ensured it was weatherproof and secure from vandalism.

I loved the information boards and the tracks leading to the lighthouse and the beach area. Well maintained and the toilets we welcomed.
This is well worth a visit with a fantastic lighthouse very close to the car park, abundant wildlife including sea lions and native birds. The beach South of the lighthouse has very cool stones which I haven’t seen anywhere else before. Prone to extreme weather but very accessible and not worth missing on any trip to the Catlins.
Well signposted. Short walking access. Great location
Excellent..freezing even in January but wild and isolated. The road is now sealed, saw a sealing here too, and if you walk to where the house was, you can see trees at right angles from the wind!
Its easy to find and roads well paved with site well managed. Great little gem complete with a little hike if you want
Beautiful place. Would definitely recommend you to stop here and just enjoy the peace at this spot. You can also take a walk over the beach either going at the right or left side of the lighthouse.
Its beautiful place and if you are there at the right time you can see some wild life.
Well, it’s a lighthouse, what can I say. Interesting history about how it came to be. A sea lion was playing in the bay.
