Waipapa Point lighthouse

Story

Waipapa Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse located at Waipapa Point, Southland, New Zealand. It was first lit on 1 January 1884.The lighthouse was built in response to the wreck of the passenger steamer Tararua on reefs off Waipapa Point on 29 April 1881, with the loss of 131 lives. With its sibling, the retired Kaipara North Head lighthouse, this was one of the last two wooden lighthouses built in New Zealand. The lighthouse was automated and keepers withdrawn in 1975. It has been solar powered since 1988. A new LED beacon was installed externally on the balcony of the lighthouse in December 2008. Restoration work conducted in 2008 ensured it was weatherproof and secure from vandalism.

Quite ordinary looking lighthouse but a beautiful location. Beautiful beach.
A good road leads to the lighthouse, great views and an interesting history. A great place to get some paua at low tide if you are keen. Seals nearby on the beach
Didn't feel overly special. Just another lighthouse. But worth learning on the history boards about a shipwreck from 1881. I think this was a wreckage you can see at low tide, but I arrive at high tide
Awesome. Easy walk to this icon. Amazingly it exactly replicates the one in the kaipara, my home
One of my favorite places to visit, beautiful lighthouse, seals, bird life... 5 minute walk to lighthouse
I loved the information boards and the tracks leading to the lighthouse and the beach area. Well maintained and the toilets we welcomed.
Beautiful day with a warm nor west wind blowing. Stunning views easy walking tracks.
This is well worth a visit with a fantastic lighthouse very close to the car park, abundant wildlife including sea lions and native birds. The beach South of the lighthouse has very cool stones which I haven’t seen anywhere else before. Prone to extreme weather but very accessible and not worth missing on any trip to the Catlins.
