Waikura landowners ,comprising iwi and non iwi, are seeking new solutions to manage the erosion, its negative impacts and subsequent threats to environment
Waikura Land Restoration Project will address the critical environmental risks associated with the
large scale, active gully erosion problem in this region. It will research and trial new methods and tools to stabilise the severely damaged area, such as use of eco-technological solutions for unstable slopes; and ground bio and eco- engineering techniques. Indigenous and exotic plants, including the tropical grass Vetiver, will be trialled for soil reinforcement and environmental protection.
Waikura landowners , comprising iwi and non iwi, are seeking new solutions to manage the erosion, its negative impacts and subsequent threats to environmental sustainability.
This project will provide a platform for their active participation in the development of their own land management plan through research, trials, vegetation planting and assessment.
Improved soil retention on the site and restoration of the natural ecosystems in the valleys will improve the economic, social and cultural dimensions for the owners.
