WHAT IS A MYSORE CLASS?
Most of the classes are taught in the 'Mysore' Style. In a Mysore Class, the student is given the space to practice at their own pace. Therefore, initially at least, there is a certain emphasis on memorising the sequence. One of the great things about this format is that it allows for more one-on-one interaction with the teacher. This approach can be very beneficial for this reason as advice and guidance is tailored to your particular needs.
For the beginner, the first sessions will be quite short - allowing time to steadily build up an understanding and proficiency in the basic movements and principles of Ashtanga Vinyasa. From there, a personal practice is developed over the weeks and months under the watchful eye of the teacher.
The wonderful thing about this approach is that, after a while, you have a Yoga practice that you can take anywhere.
ANDREW TROTTER - BACKGROUND
I first began practicing Yoga in 2003. I remember these first classes very vividly. For me, there was an instant affinity for the practice and I could feel its benefits from day one.
After a few years, I began teaching Yoga on a casual basis to climbers at The Roxx Climbing Centre in Christchurch each week. It was a great privilege to work with such an enthusiastic group of individuals and it was through my time with these students that I began to develop my teaching skills.
In 2009 I decided to formalise my training by committing to a 3 year teaching apprenticeship in Sydney with Angelika Knoerzer. Under Angelika's experienced guidance, my appreciation and understanding of Yoga and its rich tradition expanded. As part of my training, I also attended workshops with other well respected Ashtanga practitioners such as Graeme Northfield, Gregor Maehle and Dena Kingsberg. I also studied Yoga philosophy with Michael Demanicor and anatomy with Leslie Kaminoff. It was such a brilliant experience being exposed to these masterful teachers and I cherish these times greatly.
Now, having moved back to Christchurch, I am looking forward to sharing some of what I have learnt. Naturally, the process of learning will never end and I will continue to spend as much time as possible in the company of great Yoga practitioners to help keep my perspective fresh and as true to the teachings of Yoga as possible.
