Story

The Upper Nihotupu Reservoir is one of five reservoirs in the Waitakere Ranges that supply water to Auckland, New Zealand. Completed in 1923, the concrete gravity dam and its reservoir are managed by Water Care Services Limited, a council-owned company.ConstructionConstruction was difficult due to the amount of rainfall and flooding in the area and spanned a total of 8 years. One person was killed during the construction of the bush tram line.TourismThe Nihotupu area and the picturesque Nihotupu Falls were a tourist attraction in the late 19th century before the dam for the reservoir was built.A bush tram that was built during the construction of the dam and its water pipeline was used for the Water Care-run "Rainforest Express" tourist excursions. As at November 2014, the RFE is closed by Watercare until further notice along with the closure of the Waitakere Tramline simultaneously, by Watercare. Please enquire with Watercare for further information or look up Waitakere Tramline and NZ Regional Trains on facebook. The dam was the end point of the trips from Jacobson's Depot and can also be reached by walking track access from Piha Road. The Upper Nihotupu Reservoir is one of five reservoirs in the Waitākere Ranges that supply water to Auckland and look after by water care Auckland council .Starting though some beautiful native bush before joining a gravel road, offers some great views. Following a stream through to the Dam itself there are a couple of epic waterfalls to stop by .The historical Nihotupu Dam is very much worth the walk. But a bit confusing as no marking on walk way how long it is. further 10 minute walk will take you to a picnic area where you can follow the old tramline to the base of the Nihotupu Dam. From here it is possible to return to the top of the dam via a series of stairs, these are steep! So be careful. Such a great walk for all the family.
Enroute to Piha Beach enjoy this mesmerizing walking trail at the tip of Waitākere Ranges Regional Park ‍. Surrounded by endangered Kauri trees and beautiful floral and fauna, this is the perfect spot for a family picnic On the way you'll see streams flowing and leading up to the Upper Nihotupu Dam. After a quick eat at the picnic spot at the very end, continue along the tram rail line that will lead you to the bottom of the Dam. - Use photography devices with utmost care on the Dam, due to heavy wind gusts!!
Good for a walk without too much sun
It's quite a pleasant treck of approx 40 minutes one way to the dam site. There is also a covered picnic area consisting of about 6 tables 15 minutes away from the dam site. You cam also walk down to the base of the dam from the picnic site. The dam site is worth a visit.
Great walk to the dam 40 min and not to difficult..nice waterfalls along the way
This is a fantastic 3-4 hour walk to do with the family or group. The track is well maintained, picturesque and a learning adventure for those interested in Auckland's water infrastructure. We went left at the fork. This leads quickly to stairs - the first hour is a climb up well placed and formed stairs and track. There are adequate stopping points for people to pass and to rally the legs for the next lot. Moderate fitness recommended. The track along the top is rolling up and down to the lookout which is a good place to stop for photos a snack and a well earned rest. Down to the dam then along to the next part which is older and not so well maintained. The next bit has muddy parts and the stairs down are narrow and hazardous. Could be difficult with young children or if you aren't particularly good on going down bad knees. It's then a pleasant stroll out. You do need to go to waterfall area separately it is off the main trail but only a couple of minutes walk. Don't swim it's not safe. Have fun!
It’s off Piha Road & there’s a mid sized car park that allows about 15 cars. From the car park there’s a short & easy walk through a bush. At the end of this track u reach the upstream of Nihotupu Falls. Walking downhill till u reach the bridge & u look back you’ll see the Falls. Keep in walking downhill on your right you’ll hear the 2nd Falls that’s tall & roaring loud. Carry on walking along the track for another 20-30 mins you’ll reach the dam. Carry on walking downhill you’ll reach the base. That’s another 20-30 min walk one way
Great little walk. On leash dog walking and great spot to get in some fresh air.
