The University of Waikato in the Bay of Plenty
The University of Waikato has been active in the Bay of Plenty region since the 1990s, when it first formed an alliance with the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic to facilitate teaching in the Western Bay of Plenty. This was the first time the University provided face-to-face learning outside of Hamilton. In 2001, the University’s first cohort of students in the Bay of Plenty graduated in Tauranga. Where you’ll find us
The University is currently based across several locations in the BOP. Our two primary locations are Windermere Campus in Poike, on the southern side of the city, and the Bongard Centre in Tauranga’s CBD – we share both of these campuses with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. Our main administrative hub in the BOP is located at Windermere Campus. In addition, the Coastal Marine Field Station - a major centre of marine research excellence and part of the University’s Environmental Research Institute, is located at Sulphur Point. In Tauranga’s CBD, you’ll also find the Institute of Professional Learning, part of the University’s Faculty of Education, which provides a specialist education facility and learning resources for schools and the public.
At the Mount, you'll also find us at the UOW Adams Centre for High Performance Sport

Tauranga CBD campus development
Students who are starting secondary school now will have great tertiary study options in the BOP from 2020 with the development of the Tauranga CBD campus development. The University of Waikato is leading the campus development on behalf of the Bay of Plenty Tertiary Education Partnership. The new campus will open in central Tauranga by 2020. Study and research options will align with regional growth needs and activity, so far these include marine, ICT and logistics. Bay of Plenty Tertiary Education Partnership
The Bay of Plenty Tertiary Education Partnership (BOPTEP) was initially founded between the University and the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic on the basis of increasing tertiary education opportunities for the region. In 2010, BOPTEP expanded to include Whakatane-based Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and in 2014 Rotorua-based Waiariki Institute of Technology joined the group.
